OSX Lion Issues
Overall, I played the port of this game and was very happy. A few things created issues, however; the cutscenes were not synced very well. Audio and video did not match up, so sound typically came much later (more than a second or two) than the video. This only occurs in cutscenes in-game; FMV sequences are not affected. Also, there are a few glitches in the way the game handles audio, such as when you are underwater, there is NO music. Only if you come above the water can you hear background music from the game. Also, when driving vehicles, such as the snowmobile on certain levels, the sounds glitch quite a bit and drop in and out. It almost sounds as if the game sounds are slowed down (Lara's voice drops a bit).
I was quite content with overlooking these issues…..until I updated to OS X Lion. After updating to this release of the OS, the game won't start. It pauses at the first FMV sequence and won't go any further. I'm going to wait patiently for an update; until then, I'm not able to play the game and feel like I deserve an update, if not an apology. Very frustrating, considering I was more than half the way through the game and an OS update caused the program to stop working.
Release an update to address these issues and I will gladly give a better review!
Having installed and gotten going on this classic again, I can honestly say I'm having the biggest nostalgia storm I've ever had. I grew up playing this game on my old mac laptop, and I still have the strategy guide in my closet that I used to help with the tougher (underwater) levels. The game obviously looks dated now, 14 years after it was released on the PS1, but it's still great.
Just so no one is put off by the claims of unchangeable controls, all you do is go into the key bindings list and press return on the command you want to change and then press the button you want to bind the command to. Easy as pie, and given the wonky default settings, it's definitely needed.
Long story short, if you ever played this game way back in the day, or even if you didn't, this port is totally worth the $8 tag. Don't even think twice.
Runs extremely well on my MacBook Air. Can't describe how much I enjoyed playing this game, especially now that the software on the game discs is too "old" to be installed on the later versions of Mac or in the Air's case, there being no disk drive at all. I must address some of the other reviews about difficult or confusing keyboard controls, as you can tailor them to your convenience, and about no tutorials, because there is a full tutorial of all the controls in the game if you select 'Lara's Home'. Please fully explore the game's features before writing innacurate reviews of it.
Here's hoping for ports of Tomb Raider III, The Last Revelation, Chronicles and even TR1 or Angel of Darkness for those diehard Tomb Raider fans like myself. Well worth the money. More please, Aspyr!
