Topos2Go allows you to view and locate your position on topographic maps. You can download freely available maps and store them on your device for use without WiFi or cell access. To try before you buy see Topos2Go Free.
Topos2Go was developed with backcountry hiking and backpacking in mind. Unlike mapping apps that simply cache map data, Topos2Go gives you full control over the maps that are stored on your device. You select the maps you want on your device and they stay there until you delete them. You have no worries about whether or not your cached data will still be there when you look for it in the backcountry.

iOS 5 compatibility
I've used this with my 3GS iPhone for a few years now in the back country with no cell coverage. It works awesome. I just bought an iPad 2 with wifi only and it works great too. Don't listen to those who say the ipad 2 wifi doesn't get a gps signal. It does in this app. Works in the middle of the sierras with no cell or wifi signal. Be patient when downloading the maps. It will work great after they slowly open the first time. After that it's real fast.
Works as described. Some learning curve.
Works well as described. Uses very little battery power in the field.
This is my favorite topo app to use when backpacking in the backcountry.
Finding maps to download is a bit involved, but OK. But that's just how TopoQuest works.
Requires waiting to pre-compute tiles before maps can be viewed fast.
Well worth the price. It would be better if Apple would let you keep the gps running while turning the phone reception off to save battery in the back country. Very helpful to help keep you on track. I love knowing I have access to maps wherever I may be.
