Great content, app lacking
I'm a huge fan of the content of this magazine. In fact, I'd go as far to say that it's my favorite magazine that I read monthly. Great writers, topics I want to hear about and insight into the exciting and ever growing field of trail running. However, where it lacks is in experience. It basically feels like I'm just reading a PDF. This is not what iPads are for... I could read a PDF anywhere. What I want to see is a feature-rich app experience that has the articles in a vertical view with active hyper-linked content that links to other parts of the issue as well as external sites. I also want active content that updates throughout the month, not just a static page of content. Wired mag and runners world do a fantastic job at this, for example. Overall I still love this magazine and look forward to future updates to make it even better.
Great Content, Decent App
I'm enjoying this magazine as I'm venturing into trail running. It's got great content, beautiful photography and doesn't take itself too seriously.
The app is well done and looks great on my iPad2. I like the bookmarking feature (one feature another famous running magazine doesn't have). My only complaint is that the table of contents doesn't really work, so it's basically like flipping through a big PDF.
Aside from that, I like how the price includes a free issue. I'm tempted to go with a full subscription soon.
Great magazine; HORRIBLE interface
Short version: skip this digital version and stick with the print edition.
When it worked, the app was okay. My main issue was the extremely poor quality of the images. The magazine was readable, but the images were extremely over-compressed (or something), and so very pixelated. A pity on a retina display (even a standard one, for that matter).
Then...the app crashed, I had to reinstall and was unable to restore my purchases. There's a button to do that, but it doesn't actually do anything. Messages to customer support have gone unanswered. Terrible terrible terrible.
So now I have a paid subscription that I can't do anything with. I'll likely send Apple a note as we'll to see if that does any good, but it makes me sad that such a good magazine would have affiliated themselves with such a HORRIBLE digital magazine provider.
