TransLoc Rider: Transit Tracking & Alerts
By TransLoc Inc.
This app is only available on the App Store for iOS devices.
TransLoc has raised the bar with this wholly reimagined transit-tracking app. If you’ve ever stood in the rain wondering where your bus or train is, TransLoc Rider is the app for you. TransLoc Rider provides real-time transit tracking, arrival predictions and proximity alerts.
With TransLoc Rider you can:
• Watch buses and trains move in real time
• Set alerts that tell you when your favorite bus is approaching
• See the location and heading of any bus in your vicinity
• Watch all the buses moving on a specific route
• Check the arrival predictions for all buses approaching a specific stop
• Use SmartSearch to quickly locate specific routes and stops
• New multi-modal trip plan update incorporates stop, route and schedule information when passengers use multiple modes of transportation (e.g. Uber and mass transit). *Limited to participating transit agencies.
This app leverages an Apple service called the "significant location change service", which runs in the background and collects data only when your device has traveled 500 meters and five minutes have passed. This results in a tiny processing impact to your device. The benefit to transit riders is assisting transit agencies in positioning routes and stops as well as dispatching vehicles with optimal frequency.
What's New in Version 1.4.10 (802)
Performed some very minor maintenance of the app to make sure it's running smoothly for you. Also squashed a potential bug before the iOS 11 roll out/adoption and corrected a reoccurring crash. Happy riding!
Can be occasionally inaccurate
I’ve used this app for the better part of a year now in the Tallahassee area as an FSU student, and this app gives and takes. I’m not sure if it’s because of our buses themselves or the app, but a lot of times the system says the location is “Not Available” even when the Star Metro buses aren’t on that route. Overall though when it is on its game this app is very good and the user interface is pretty easy. One feature I would absolutely LOVE though is the ability to plan a route so that you can tell which bus would be the best to take to your desired location. Other than that not bad, but if I could accurately rate it I would say it’s 3.5 stars.
Good in concept poor in execution
5 minutes away for a bus either means 15 minutes away or the bus passed 5 minutes ago. The timing estimations are atrocious and for an app that's supposed to make getting from place to place in a timely fashion easier that flaw must be fixed immediately. The only thing this app is good for is if you're already on a bus and want to know where the next stop is so you can get off and walk to where you're going instead. At least if you are walking there is no one to blame but you. I wish that I could rate this app less than one star. Just today I had a bus that was “approaching the stop” for almost twenty minutes, fix the app please. So many of us rely on it being consistent.
The app is great. Very helpful. Makes using transit very easy and effective. The only issue I have is that the only options for location determination are "always" or "never." It would be better if it were possible to turn off the location features as soon as the app was closed, rather than having to switch to settings and click through a number of screens in order to turn off the location services. Other than that, it is really great!
