Tree ID - TreeID with Fall Foliage

By MEDL Mobile, Inc.

Open iTunes to buy and download apps.

Don’t judge a tree by its bark; get to know our natural neighbors with TreeID.

Reached #12 in Canada!

TreeID was created in MEDL Mobile’s App Incubator. The idea was submitted by Jason Siniscalchi, a PhD in Forest Resource Science from Connecticut who had done his graduate studies work at West Virginia University in Forest Management.

He wanted a way to share his research and interest in tree identification with the world for all nature enthusiasts. This app will also be helpful for allergy sufferers who can now easily identify the plants they are allergic to.

TreeID allows the user to identify almost any tree in Northern America based on its:
• Name
• Scientific name
• Physical attributes (bark, leaf and fruit)
• Geographic location

Because many of us using the app may not know the proper name for identifying particular types of leaves or fruit, the app will walk the user through the various methods of tree identification. The app contains thousands of images, illustrations and notations. Yet with only a few clicks, the user should be able to identify any tree in the forest!

• Improved tree identification functionality
• More than a hundred new trees
• Fifty “Fall Foliage” trees with Autumn colors

TreeID has an extensive database of trees built right into the app. This way, it’s available to you at all times so you don’t have to worry about having no reception while trying to identify a tree.

Since our tree database is so large, this update does take a little bit of time to download. We recommend that you start your update while accessing a reliable internet connection, and make sure that you have roughly an hour of free time to stay connected before starting your download.

We are proud to call TreeID a Shiny MEDL Object. You can see all of them at And if you have an idea for an app that you’d like to see on the app store someday, visit

Not perfect, but an incredibly powerful tool

It is difficult to fully explain how much info this app contains. The index/find feature is slow, but only because it offers so many options. To be honest my favorite use is just browsing through the lists of trees--its like looking through a field guide, or almost. In some ways it contains more info as it's got more close-up pics per type of tree (leaves bark fruit/nut etc) than most paper field guides include. Bottom line no it's not perfect but obviously very well thought out and very powerful. I am baffled by the poor reviews it's gotten--the functionality seems to be the best out there. I'd give it a 4 or 4.5 stars for the lengthy search function but I feel compelled to balance out the bad reviews. Well worth three bucks or whatever the audobahn guide is going for these days. Again not perfect but by far the best choice as of now. Pics alone are worth it.

Really great app

Has dichotomous keys. Has pictures of leaves (or needles), bark, fruit, and a map showing the range. Another reviewer mentioned that there should be illustrations explaining the dichotomous key terminology. Good news, there is! It's the question mark buttons next to each option. It shows you everything! Identify trees by physical characteristics, region, common or scientific name, etc. This is app is very underrated! I have had no problems on my iPhone 4. It's free, too. Totally deserves 5 stars!

Best Tree ID app yet

As a horticulturist, I can spot a good plant app based on the accuracy and usefulness of its data and its content. This app presents in a very concise and useful manner tree identification information which has the Audubon Tree Guide beat. The reason I am giving this app 4 stars rather than 5 is because the range of inclusion isn't very broad. Like another reviewer said, it doesn't include many trees endemic to Florida as well as the Southeast. I'd imagine this is also the issue with western trees.
