Description

The software that pays for itself! Keep track of all your deductible (or reimbursable) mileage and lower your taxes!
• Track mileage in four categories (business, charity, medical, and other by default; user-configurable) for three different cars
• Record a date, distance, category, destination and, optionally, purpose for each trip, as well as tolls and parking when applicable
• Record either trip mileage or start/finish odometer readings
• Optionally record start/end time for each trip
• Immediate (same screen) view of three most recent entries to see whether you entered yesterday's trip, and to confirm correct entry of the current trip; full scrolling log view on separate screen.
• Save "frequent trips" for one-tap data entry
• Quickly add up total mileage for different time periods (e.g., last year, last week)
• Email your entire log or portions of it (by date) to yourself or your accountant for tax records, or to your company for reimbursement
• Watch a QuickTime movie of the software in action at http://www.stevenscreek.com/iPhone/videos/TripLog.mov
• Read the complete online manual at http://www.stevenscreek.com/iPhone/triplog.htm

What's New

Version 3.1

For those using a script to send logged information, if the "Email To" setting is empty, the script will include a new "user" parameter which contains the "name" of the device (e.g., "Joe's iPhone"). If "Email To" setting is not empty, the script should include an "email" parameter, as has been the case.

I have read the good, the bad and the ugly. Let's forget the last set of entries as it does nothing to further the cause, or should I say, the need, for improvement. I've looked at the other apps and not since the one I had on my Palm Treo has there been a near perfect app to do what most of us need for business and our tax records. Clearly, from the initial app, this has improved dramatically and has responded to nearly all the requests placed before them. I especially appreciate the video demonstration, as it also proved informative beyond the reviews and allowed me to discover that you can log mileage for cars nearing and soon to pass 100K, like I will within months, so my investment is not made obsolete. The auto entry features for favorites is great. I can use it for my (non-deductible) commute mileage. I'll be playing around with it more, but so far, worth the investment. I only ask (or kindly suggest), a better app image than the Corvette and legal pad background. An odometer or or digital counter graphic with a 1040 form as a background might be more in keeping with today's users and reality. Hey, if I drove a Corvette, chances are I wouldn't care about recording my mileage!

A decent solution

Ever since I purchased my iPhone in Nov 2007 I was looking forward to finding a good app to track my business driving. When the app store first launched this was the only program available, and I held off on buying it for a few months due to the negative reviews. However, the developer seems responsive to the complaints and requests of the customers, and most if not all of these initial issues have been addressed in subsequent updates.

This program, while far from pretty, does a competent job tracking things as of the current release. I have not had any major issues with the program. The price is a little high for the App Store, but it helps me track my mileage far more accurately than my old method and I capture enough extra miles using this program that it has paid for itself several times over.

Also, I am a professional tax preparer and the records this keeps are sufficient for my personal records, and I would not have a problem with any client who submitted this log to me to prepare their return. I am not sure why other users have commented that their preparers don't think that this is good enough.

Not as bad as some say

This app squeezes a lot of data into a single screen, but the interface is not at all confusing as some have suggested. But, if some find it confusing, the developer should not be offended, but should focus on understanding why some have difficulty with the app. Being a minor programmer myself, I really can't quarrel with the interface other than to say I find the milage scroll wheel subject to imprecision due to it's miniature size. One slight bug is that the e-mailed report columns don't line up well.
I think one of the problems with the App Store is that the buyers can't try a demo before buying. Perhaps that is why buyers tend to be more critical, and certainly buyers have been super critical throughout the App Store, not just on this one app. Users certainly have a right to demand that an app perform well, but most users are quite naive as to the work that goes into writing an app of this sort.
All said, this app performs the functions as advertised. If the developer can be open minded to the negative reviews, then the app can and will be improved. The reviews should point the developer toward simplifying the interface so that even the least sophisticated user can understand and find the application useful.
