What's New in Version 4.3.1
“4.3?” roared David Karp across the boardroom table. He spun on his heels, turning his back to the board. His shoulder muscles rippled through his gingham shirt.
“4.3? We can do better than that. We HAVE to do better than that.”
The boardroom broke into murmurs. They had done everything right with 4.3. The entire company, top to bottom, had signed off on it. The research was there. It was focus-grouped for ten months straight. It was a sure-fire hit.
An executive VP piped up. “But, David, 4.3 is the most market-tested product we’ve ever released! The approval numbers are off the charts!”
David’s hand came smashing down on the luxurious mahogany slab. Glasses rattled. A ballpoint pen was sent flying. “I don’t give a darn about the numbers! What happened to doing something because you gave a flying flip about it? What happened to the passion? Numbers? The others guys can have numbers. We’ve gotta have passion, or we’re not worth the CD-ROMs we’re printed on. Passion. That’s what it’s all about. That’s why we’re all here.” David gestured behind him, toward the plate-glass window, the Manhattan skyline sparkling beyond. “We do it for them. For the common man. The common man needs Tumblr now more than ever.”
He spun again, now facing outward onto the city he loved. From every street rose a memory. Lexington Avenue, where he learned to ride a bike, and where he got his first broken arm (Maury, who owned the bagel store, came running out when it happened. Good old Maury). Bleecker Street, where he got his first kiss, and saw his first real rock ’n roll show. The Velvet Underground. A sound so raw and real it could only come out of NYC. Finally, he looked down directly onto the street below. The street on which he’d built his business…no, not his business—his dreams. Below was a street on which the creative passions of millions of users had stacked up into a four-hundred-thirty-one-story skyscraper that housed the collective energy of Tumblr.
David Karp pressed his nose against the glass and looked deep down into the canyon of 431st Street. Four-three-one. That’s when it hit him.
“Four-three-one. That’s it. Version 4.3.1. That’s what we’ve gotta do. Version 4.3.1 of the Tumblr app for iOS.”
Silence fell over the board room. The air around the one-of-a-kind, designer table was thick with uncertainty.
Then came the sound, ringing out like a shot. It was a handclap. The executive VP has risen to his feet. Another handclap erupted from his palms. His muscular, deliberate applause electrified the room.
The next thing David knew, the entire board was on its feet. Clapping, stomping, hollering. The sound was thunderous, deafening. This was it. This was why he had followed his dream in the first place. This...
This was 4.3.1.
Why do you torture us
The 4.3.1 update was completely unnecessary. Everything worked fine in 4.3 but now there are more cons than pros to this update. The video player has stopped working, half the time, the audio doesn't come on when you hit the button, as well as it not putting the volume back on if you leave and return to the app (like it had in 4.3). The video restarts when you try to put the audio back on and it's incredibly annoying. You can no longer delete messages in your inbox? The only options are to reply or block the sender. Most of the time you don't need to reply or anything and when you do, the message doesn't even go away and it stays in your inbox. The app has lost the ability to scroll past long posts without crashing. When returning to the app the whole screen empties for a few seconds. All external images have to be reloaded after scrolling away or leaving the app. Your following search bar doesn't show who you've searched for half the time (yes it's spelled correctly). For every step forward this app has taken, it has also taken two steps back. PLEASE listen to your users while making the updates because we are the ones who have to deal with the crappy features and useless updates that change what we have put up with and gotten used.
New update is confusing
While I do like that they've added new features to the mobile update, like your commonly used tags showing up when you start to type in the tags, and the ability to use the @ to tag someone in your post, it's nice we finally have those on mobile.
BUT and this is a big but, it's not worth the new layout. It's confusing, hard to find everything, and the lack of space between posts on the dashboard makes everything feel cluttered and visually unappealing. It makes my eyes hurt. There are some basic functions I'm still having trouble finding. I still can't access my messages and it took me like 10 minutes just to figure out where in the heckie they put the option to queue a post.
All in all I am very disappointed and getting on my phone during lunch break to this unpleasant surprise has easily been the worst part of my day so far.
Fun app, but very acidic culture
Tumblr is a very fun app to use, and basically can be anything you want it to be. From an art blog to a meme blog, tumblr will have a niche for you. Even for people who have multiple interests, the option to run multiple blogs is available. However, tumblr has one prevailing problem, that being it's toxic culture. Granted, the toxicity is well intended, meaning to shame sexism, transphobia, homophobia, and racism. But, if you are a heterosexual white male, you will be called "trash". Luckily, this culture can be avoided by simply ignoring it or unfollowing the people who brought it to your front page. Otherwise, the app is immensely entertaining and a joy. The only technical problem I've experienced was that it does crash occasionally, but that can be fixed by exiting and reentering the app, or deleting and redownloading the app. I would recommend tumblr to snyone
