Tumblr is a place to discover and post about stuff you love, and join communities of people who love that same stuff. It’s pretty neat.

Q: What can I post on Tumblr?
A: Photos, videos, live videos, songs, text—pretty much anything.

Q: Can I make gifs?
A: Yes, you CAN make gifs! You can make them out of videos, bursts, live photos, or just shoot them on the spot.

Q: What’s the deal with “reblogging”?
A: It’s a way to take the stuff you find on Tumblr and make it your own. You can repost other people’s posts to your own blog. You can add commentary if you like. Other people can do the same with your posts. That’s how ideas spread on Tumblr, and it’s how communities form around them.

Q: Who’s on Tumblr?
A: People who are posting and reblogging about interesting stuff that you’re interested in. Politics. Movies. Memes and such. If you’ve ever seen anything interesting on the internet, chances are it came from Tumblr.

Q: How do I talk to people on Tumblr?
A: A few different ways. You can comment on a post, or you can reblog a post to your own Tumblr and add commentary, or you can send a private message. Whatever suits the occasion.

Q: How do I find stuff to follow?
A: Search for whatever you’re interested in. We’ll show you great posts about that stuff, and get you following the people who make those posts. Oh, you can also follow a search itself, and we’ll put sift the best material from that search right into your dashboard.

Q: What kind of stuff are people talking about on Tumblr *right now*?
A: Whatever’s happening in the world. The real world, the world of fiction, the world of pop culture, the world of academics, the world of safety and justice, the world of sports. Whatever world you live in, you’ll find it among all the trending topics in the search tab.

Q: Do all Tumblrs look the same?
A: No! You can totally customize your Tumblr’s appearance, right down to the colors and fonts you use.

Q: How will people find my Tumblr?
A: Tag your posts. Tumblr is full of passionate communities of people who are constantly searching through tags for new posts about stuff they love. Your stuff could be that stuff.

Q: Am I ready to download Tumblr, deepen my perspective, and forever change the way I think?
A: Yes.

What's New in Version 8.8.1

The Tumblr section of your Settings app has some new controls for choosing what content you see on Tumblr, and what content you don’t.

The “Explore” screen (you know, the stuff on the search page before you start searching) now shows recommended posts in a neat little grid. More content, less scrolling.

We said NO to some bugs and they listened.

Customer Reviews

The new "safe search" update is annoying. Since I'm a minor, I don't have the authority to control the content I want to see. Every "sensitive" post is blocked and there's nothing I can do about it. For whenever I turn the "safe search" off, it immediately turns back on after opening the app. I'm aware this isn't a glitch or a bug, it simply has to do with me being under 18 years old. Because of this, I am no longer able to view some of my favorite artists account since some of their works are labeled as nsfw. Though, there's an account I'm following that reblogs fanart and official updates on specific fandoms (such as new season release dates, magazines, etc.) and I don't even have access to look at their account anymore even though they aren't 18+ blogs. Instead of the safe search update, there should be controls within the Tumblr app that will allow you to control what you see based on the tags you block. Whether you're a minor or not. I had no problems with the app before this new update, it used to be my favorite. Because I was able to see all the original posts of all the artists I admire, and was able to support them through the app. But I'm now no longer able to do so due to this update. Please, just get rid of "safe search" and make this easier and more enjoyable for everyone on the site.

Where do I start

The app is acting glitchy and the new design is annoying to see. I wish they would just leave the app the way it is instead of trying to redesign it. Censoring content is completely unnecessary. The app says 17+, how about you just prevent people from signing up unless they're birthdate is over 17?? Are you clueless? The new controls are blocking innocent material from my dashboard which is not only upsetting but annoying. I don't know how staff is deciding if a post is inappropriate, but they're doing it wrong. They should be blocking nsfw content from kids under 18 if and only if it is reported or marked as explicit. blank out swear words if that's necessary. I hate scrolling through my dashboard and only seeing blocked material, it's annoying and tedious and if anything just don't put it there. Delete the pornbot blogs instead of innocent bloggers who didn't mark they're blog as explicit when they reblogged a curse word. Stop marking LGBT content and inappropriate just because Karen doesn't want her 16 year old son to know what gay people are. Make the app more functional and prevent glitching. Get some new staff with some common sense? Control what I see I the ads, which themselves can be inappropriate. Maybe try and make this a better experience for everyone and just go back to the old design from 2013.

This new update needs serious work

This new "safe mode" is awful. I understand that it has good intentions, but when perfectly safe for work posts are being censored (ALL LGBT related posts are being censored. even just ones that say "lesbians are strong!" That's really messed up) something has gone terribly wrong. Take this "feature" down, do more work on it to make sure it works properly before putting it back up. I really don't want to think that a website that claims to celebrate LGBT pride is also censoring every single pride post during pride month on purpose.

Also, when I go in my settings to turn this feature off, it automatically turns it back on when I open the app again. So I can't even get rid of this terrible feature. Absolutely disgusted by my experience on the site with this feature as someone who is LGBT.
