From the makers of Pillars of Eternity, the 2015 Mac App Store Game of the Year, comes Tyranny!

In Tyranny, the grand war between good and evil is over – and the forces of evil, led by Kyros the Overlord, have won. The Overlord’s merciless armies dominate the face of the world, and its denizens must find their new roles within the war-torn realm. Players interact with the populace to inspire loyalty, disgust, or fear as they roam the world as an officer in Kyros’ forces, empowered to act as both judge and executioner.

Just couldn’t get into it.

Maybe it was the play evil slant. More likely it is the character design and game play. I just could not get into this game. The graphics and atmosphere are great, but I never felt like I understood combat, and that my decisions were impacting the outcome. The effect of what you chose was a little too opaque to really gauge if one tactic or another was making a difference. In the end, I played a maybe 10 hours into the first act… and just spent my time doing other things. When I tried picking the game up again, it felt like maybe I should start again from the beginning, but that just seemed like a slog. So I couldn’t rate this RPG too highly. It really comes down to a matter of taste I think. I loved many of the classic isometric RPGs: Balder’s Gate, NeverWinter Nights, DragonAge , and Icewind Dale all hold good memories. I enjoyed the Pillars of Eternity game. This just did not grab me.

Great in some ways, poor in others

The good:
* The characters, the world, and the broad outline of the story are deep and well-written.
* The magic system is interesting and fresh.
* The art is often gorgeous, and it helps to build the world.
* The player’s decisions matter, which matches the game's mature themes.

The bad:
* There isn’t a wide variety of enemies, and combat gets boring.
* Sometimes the story feels disjointed and oddly-paced, like it was written in (excellent) individual modules and pasted together awkwardly.

The ugly:
* There are still some game-breaking bugs, especially in the expansions. (There is still active development on the game, so bugs might be fixed.)

IF you liked Pillars of Eternity… you’ll love Tyranny.

Playing this after completing PoE at the “Path of the Damned” or Expert level, and i must say, i like Tyranny better is just about every respect. NO technical glitches in this version, as yet. The story is more compeling… reputations with factions are more important as are decisions in dialog. The graphics are better, as is combat… etc. I do have some minor quibbles, but not worth discussing. If you are looking for a strong RPG, with likely very good replay value, look no further.
