Hearing Loss Myth: Hearing loss affects only "old people" and is merely a sign of aging.
Actually it is the reverse of what most people think. The majority (65%) of people with hearing loss are younger than age 65. There are more than six million people in the U.S. between the ages of 18 and 44 with hearing loss, and nearly one and a half million are school age. Hearing loss affects all age groups.
uHear™ is a hearing loss screening test which allows you to test your hearing to determine if it is within normal range, or if you have a potential hearing loss.
uHear lets you assess your hearing on any one or all three of these tests:
1. Hearing Sensitivity is used to determine the quietest sounds you can hear.
2. Speech in Noise is a measurement of your ability to understand speech in the presence of noise.
3. Questionnaire is a series of twelve questions regarding your performance in common listening situations.
If you do suspect a hearing loss, please seek the advice of a professional.
uHear was designed by Donald Hayes, Ph.D. Director of Audiology for Unitron Hearing.
Test yourself! Test your friends! Test your kids! Test your parents!
Results VERY close to my pro tests
I'm 61 and woke up one morning with a humming like a microwave fan in my left ear and severe hearing loss. Five days later the ENT was treating me with steroid injections into the inner ear. High tones recovered but low tones didn't. Probably a virus attacked the main nerve. Anyway, I now have tennitis and the left hear hums constantly but is generally decreasing.
I've been to 3 professional hearing tests in the past 6 weeks. The last graph from those tests looks a LOT like the results in my first Uhear test. I'm using Sony Pro headphones with an iPhone 4S and testing in a bathroom for a sound booth. I can still faintly hear outside noises such as distant aircraft landing and taking off so that doesn't help. However, there are no material differences in the Uhear results from the professional results. The low tones in my left ear show severe loss and everything else in both ears show normal to mild loss. Considering the I grew up in the San Francisco Bay Area in the 60's and attended way too many rock events this is pretty good.
I would love to try this in the audiologist's soundbooth. I'll report back if I get the chance to do that.
Very COOL App! You Gotta Get it!
I just had a hearing test at the ENT. The Hearing Sensitivity part of this app - well, it was just like being at the doctors office. And the "bottom line" results are the same!
This is a great screening test for anyone and everyone. I highly recommend it.
I especially like how the developers explain the use & modification of headphones and earbuds. I took the test with BOSE noise canceling headphones and the standard iPhone earbuds. There was some variation, but the end result was the same (a certain amount of hearing loss in the high frequency range).
If I had this app before, then I would not have "pooh-poohed" my ENTs suggestion of a hearing test 6 months ago (when I first developed tinnitus).
This app is free and useful for the whole family - a great reason to get it!
Interesting, informative, and beautifully done
You could just download this app alone for its beauty & integration with wonderfully designed background & UI images; they did an awesome job. With that said, this app provides a great amount of hearing information to the general public. In less than 10 minutes you can have some interesting information about your personal hearing levels and abilities. The only downside of the app is that now that I've used it, there's really no good repeat-ability. I used it, I'm not going to test my friends, so I'm basically going to uninstall it. It has a nice save feature if you wanted to test different family members. Strong work Unitron Hearing Limited; you've produced a 5 star app!
