Why Pay for Silence When You can Get it for Free
Usually, at the beginning of an app review, I try to be nice. I usually praise the concept of the app, even if the implementation is not well. However, this time around, I have nothing nice to say. The concept of this app may be terrific, but I cannot tell. The sounds may be beautiful, but I can't hear a thing. I have absolutely nothing nice to say about this app, and I will start by saying that it is way over priced. I have purchased similar apps of astoundingly better quality for only $0.99. For me, four dollars is way too much to spend on a voice-activated noise maker, let alone one that doesn't even work. This leads me into my next complaint. This app is supposed to play sounds, so someone, please tell me why it mutes all audio coming from my iPhone as soon as it starts? That sort of defeats the purpose of playing sounds in the first place! I know that this app is voice-activated, and I'm cool with that, but how come it doesn't play something if I make a sound. I tried snapping, clapping, talking, even blowing into the microphone, and this thing does not work. Furthermore, if there are any settings I need to configure before the app will play sounds when it hears something, I cannot configure them because my audio is completely muted, and I can't see the screen. I am a totally blind iPhone user, and in order for me to do so much as tap an icon, I need working audio. All current model iPhones have a built-in feature listed under Settings, General, and Accessibility, called VoiceOver. VoiceOver reads the screen aloud to a visually impaired user, such as myself, and allows them to use their iPhones based on spoken cues that play through the headphones or speaker. Since this app mutes all audio as soon as it is launched, VoiceOver is muted as well. Therefore, I and anyone else who wants to use this app who may be visually impaired cannot do so. I have had some success working around this issue with similar voice-activated apps. In the past, I would make a sound, and as soon as I did, the app would play something, causing my audio to come back on and VoiceOver to read the interface aloud as it should. However, this little trick does not work for me at all here. As I said, I could not get the app to make any kind of noise, so VoiceOver stayed muted for as long as the app was running. I could not change any settings, I could not even tell if the interface was there, and I thought my iPhone had frozen. Even after I returned to the home screen, my audio still would not come back on. I had to restart my iPhone just to be able to use it again because of this ridiculous app! After all, as far as I knew, it turned off my screen! I can't believe I paid four dollars for something that, to me, almost crashed my iPhone!
