There is a level of expectation around such a ground-breaking title. Unfortunately, EA falls a bit short of expectations. While the game mirrors the game we have come to expect, the execution is off.
For starters, the controls are not nearly as responsive as they could be. At times the joystick "sticks" or does not respond to your stick placement (e.g. You can clearly see that the joystick is pointed down, but the character is moving forward or backward).
But, what is most disappointing is that the game lacks the "feel" of a Mortal Kombat title. The trademark gore and violence have been removed. Rather than allowing the gore to be turned off in the settings, EA does not include it with the game. Fatalities have been censored to just a dark screen with sound. While I am usually not a fan of gratuitous blood and gore, the culture behind MK titles has always been to push the envelope in this area.
Another place where EA fell short on the "feel" of an MK title was in the graphics. Mortal Kombat has been a forerunner in realistic and smooth graphics. This title takes a large step back from what gamers expect from the title.
All in all, the game play (apart from the joystick problems) is enjoyable in its own right. But, it fell short of living up to the Mortal Kombat franchise expectations.
Don't waste your money until they make some updates which I sincerely hope they consider doing. The AI in single player is simply relentless. Even in novice mode no human being has a chance of completing a combo move within the time that your AI has you beaten. They perform combos in a split second, and if your lucky enough to get to Shao, don't plan on beating him unless you've got the patience of Job. Anything you throw at him gets reflected back to you, and even when you block, he clobbers you. He is far too fast to make any combo moves, and even if you had the time, the controls are way too janky to complete any combinations. Aside from all this, when the AI defeats you within two rounds, you have to wait for it to load, hit Kontinue, choose your Kharacter, and wait for it to load once again, just to be pummeled once more. I was able to make it one enemy short of the last in the second difficulty. And even that took patience, and a great deal of luck. I am used to playing on the first generation PlayStation, and that's what I'll be sticking to. Also I have the 2nd generation iPad, and when using the smart cover it does not rotate so I cannot play it setting down. To put it short, I was excited when I searched for this app and found it, and was extremely disappointed after the first 10 minutes of gameplay. My suggestion, forget you ever saw this app.
I bought this game because ...
... it was one of my favorites as a teenager. All I can say now is that my taste in games was drastically changed since that time. I could barely get through one complete run through the game cause I was so incredibly bored. I don't know, I guess I just don't have the patience anymore to learn special moves and combos. I was able to get through the entire game using just Scorpion's 'come here' thing followed by an uppercut -- which says something about the AI and how dull the game can be.
I've yet to play a fighting game on the iPad that makes sense. I'm sorry, but games like MK and Street Fighter just don't work on a touchscreen device. Unless the iPad of the future has some sort of physical peripheral, developers of fighting games are going to need to think outside the box instead of just cloning their PS3 / XBOX games over to the iPad. Infinity Blade is a good start -- yes, it's not your standard fighting game, but it's close enough and it exploits the iPads strengths very well.
To be clear, I think this is a satisfactory port of the arcade / console version of MK to the iPad, but I'd only buy it if you're really into MK or fighting games.
