No justification for requiring a subscription

græy

This “software as service” model is blatantly anti-consumer, and is simply about getting more profit for developers. When my web host charges a subscription, I get it, since there’s ongoing costs involved. But these folks have decided that you should rent their app, even though they host nothing. Virtually every other developer on the planet is able to fund ongoing development with sales alone. Perhaps our company here doesn’t trust their app enough for this to be viable?

Edit: I realized it wasn’t Ulysses that I had bought, it was the predecessor to Ulysses, called Daedalus. It is no longer supported. It is downloadable if you’d bought it before, but is unusable (you can’t actually delete anything). Still, that part of my review wasn’t accurate, so I got rid of it.

Still, my main gripe is this idea of renting software, which is just a cash grab and is not justifiable. Pages is free, and there are plenty of other good word processors for iOS that don’t expect a subscription. Even Scrivener, at $20, would pay for itself in 4 months compared to Ulysses. There is absolutely nothing this app does that justifies the cost.

Interface Changes Give Me a Nervous Breakdown

Mikah257

Bad Ulysses! I was going to drop a star, but after continuing to dig, I found the settings that will (eventually) allow me to get back to work. The app is so good, even giving me interface poisoning, it's still better than anything I've used. <grumble>

The worst change is that, in pursuit of an interface to match the Mac, this update cluttered up limited real estate with additional menus. Some you can turn off, some you can't. (The iPhone and Mac are two different platforms and did not require "matching!")

My theme changed to underline (>>shudder<<) the top level header, instead of a highlight color. (To change: go to an individual doc, tap the 'AA' text menu, which will change the theme. Not intuitive.)

It may just be my imagination, but is the line height tighter? Or is it the font ? Or the kerning? (To tweak this, go to the lines and characters settings buried in the statistics menu that you get by tapping the word count, which now floats over text.)

And when you want to search inside the doc, that search is inside the keyboard menu.

Everything you want is there, but now you have jump through additional hoops to get to it.

Still the best, Ulysses, but you are testing my patience with this interface!!

Heartbroken

Jamdi D

I have used Ulysses for pretty much all text documents including a large reference book I’m in the process of writing. Until this latest update Ulysses has served virtually every pressing need for a text editor—it’s the best editor I’ve found in the thirty years I’ve been writing books. But I am now tearing my hair out. This last update has broken both the general and the in-document search function. In short, a search string won’t locate the word or words being looked for. It will oh-so-helpfully tell you how many instances of the word(s) occur, but you are left to hunt for them yourself. This is true on both my iPhone and my iPad. The search function is still working on my Mac though, so I am not completely lost when desperate. Come on, Ulysses, you are better than this, especially when we are paying a hefty subscription fee! Please fix.
