VANGUARD STORM is the newest addition to the CRYSTAL DEFENDERS series of "defensive simulation" games.
Players must strategically position units within various formations in order to prevent encroaching monster hordes from breaking through the front lines and stealing the army's crystals.
VANGUARD STORM employs a real-time turn system. Reading the battlefield and determining optimal locations for each allied unit before the turn counter is spent is crucial for victory.
As with CRYSTAL DEFENDERS, VANGUARD STORM also features jobs from the popular FINAL FANTASY Tactics A2.
Each job possesses a variety of different traits. Whether engaging in a concentrated attack or a gradual, widespread assault, players must constantly adjust battle formations in order to best take advantage of their units' abilities.
In addition to jobs geared towards offensive maneuvers, there are also jobs which support or enhance other units. White Mages can restore an injured ally's HP, while Bishops can increase a nearby unit's attack power.
Finally, the monsters of VANGUARD STORM come in all different shapes and sizes. Some tread upon the ground, while others attack from the skies. Some even have resistances to certain types of attacks. One important strategy is to recognize these traits and then adjust battle formations accordingly; pitting melee-oriented jobs such as Soldiers against monsters who resist magick, or Archers against aerial enemies.
What's New in Version 1.0.1
Modified "save and quit" function at the initial launch of the game.
Repetitive, unimaginative and overpriced. :(
I had high hopes for it and it was interesting when I started playing it but it stops being fun after a few levels. The new units aren't all that interesting (Dragoon = Black Mage except it deals physical damage, Flintlock is an Archer except that it deals magic damage), and the enemies are not entirely engaging either. Four attributes (flying, physical resist, magic resist, fast moving) do not provide sufficient combinations IMO. And the direct copying of your units onto the opposing side as enemies is nearly tacky. At least throw a new sprite on them.
Attack patterns are pretty weak, as well. Except for the aforementioned copies of your units, all enemies attack directly ahead of them one space. If they're big scary bosses then it's the two vertical spaces in front of them. Your own ranged attackers often sit idly for turns in the beginning when, because of the size of the board, they can't move to any space that will permit their diagonal attack to hit an enemy.
I'd love to see some changes to this game, but seeing as how its last update was in the summer of '09 I doubt that will happen. Thanks, Squeenix.
Pro And Con.
This game was great at first, very intriguing and it kinda pulls you in. But it needs an update or atleast a nice storyline. The "story" as mentioned is a brief introduction of WHY you're playin the game.
Anyhoo- to the pros and cons.
PROS- Very Strategic, you need to use your head and beat the clock.
Different enemies, different terrains.
A highscore system.
CONS- No Storyline.
No money system.
No need for a level-based fighting.
Needs an update.
Needs more classes.
Should be SOMEWHAT cheaper.
Possibly make the time limit a little longer on some levels.
It's your choice you choose!
SoggyTaco; over and out.
I love the gameplay! This and crystal defenders rock! I am a huge fan of Final Fantasy and of course of square-enix! This game is amazing! Period! I am on the third area now and just love it! If you are reading this Square-Enix, please put an rpg on the iPhone, please! I need one on here! Something like Final Fantasy Touch or Song summoner remade for the iPhone! But these two games you have made are a great start for the gaming business! This game is so worth $4.99!
