Missing a few things

pthalia75

I was really excited about the app at first, but after using it a while I found some not so great things about the app. Why doesn’t it show Chipotle as a vegan friendly restaurant? Chipotle is by far the best vegan friendly fast food restaurant and I’m disappointed to not be able to look for them on this app. I believe it’s listed on the website version, but does not appear on the mobile. Also, why are you not allowed to search restaurants not just locations? Lastly, knowing my area, there are some vegan friendly places that are not being shown listed on here; makes me wonder how many restaurants could really be on here but are being slept on. I tried adding it on the “add restaurant” feature but it was a bit complicated and kept giving me error messages. So at least perhaps add a feature where you could add personal restaurants. I heard you’re working on making profiles, so maybe people can start making their own list of recommended websites.

Developer Response

Hi pthalia75,
We do some list some Chipotle locations, and have plans to add all of them, but for now they just clutter the site and most people know they have some options there. Once we add an option to hide / show chains we'll add them to the site. All listings on the site also show in the apps, it's just a matter of how you have your filters set.
If you wish to search for a specific name of a restaurant you may do that from search tab. Just enter the restaurant name in the "keywords" field.
In terms of other Veg-Option listings, we're always looking for places with decent options. Our moderators add them on a case-by-case basis.
We've just updated the submission form, so please try it again and let us know if you have any issues adding a place.

Only worth it if free

[J_C]*

As a vegan I like supporting vegan products, but this app is not worth even $.99... the selection is poor and only limited to places that are 100% vegan. I want to find places I can eat and don’t want to be controlled by the developer’s filtered choices. Many restaurant in my area that are vegan friendly, but only like 7-8 within 25-30 mile radios (I live in the currently 4th largest metropolis area of US).
I went to find by the map and when used the selected area, the map zoomed in (glitch) and gives me the result just for small selection.
I hate the fact that I can’t get my money back!! I paid $3.99 thinking it was a good app as I usually get if I pay more than $1... can’t believe that Peta recommended this app.

Do not purchase until they improve their database and bugs. I see plenty of options in TripAdvisor and Yelp in my area. This app is only worth if it is free at the moment, and even then TripAdvisor or Yelp provides more options and includes vegan friendly places.

Btw - not supporting restaurants that are vegan friendly and offer 100% vegan options in their menu without having to modify the order, is not supporting restaurants management that are being open minded and value our life style.
Also it makes our cause easier when you can share with non-vegans without having to inconvenience anyone.
The more people order the offered options, the larger will be the vegan menu. Then, demand will grow when the options are available (more vegans).

Developer Response

Our app is not limited to places that are 100% vegan. Did you perhaps press on the vegan button filter and search for just vegan results? Our audience is mostly vegans/vegetarians and vegan-minded people, and we allow for filters for those who are only interested in eating in vegan or vegetarian restaurants that do not serve meat products. There are many veg-option restaurants listed in our app.

As we are a vegan-centric app and our audience is more specific than those who use the other sites you describe, we have certain criteria for restaurants to list on our site/app. We realize that many restaurants will serve you a simple greens salad or potatoes, but we try to keep our app as relevant and non-cluttered as possible by not listing such restaurants. We are also a community-run site, and the search results are human-filtered. We try to keep our site more useful for most of those who use our app by listing restaurants which make more of a conscious effort to at least label dishes as vegan, create a separate vegan menu section, or provide more choices than typical items found on the majority of menus.

Within the map view of the app, you can use "Search in this area" and more results will show up near where you are long pressing.
As more and more vegan options appear in your area and other areas, the number of veg options in your area will certainly improve.
We would like to hear from you so that we may be able to assist further. Email: ios@happycow.net
Thank you.

Cool concept but..

Luna1437

There are tons of places with vegan options around me that are not on the app. The app is showing me that I live in a dead zone for vegan options, which is kind of true but the app is still missing a lot.

Edit: I appreciate the developer response, but it seems like this app is not what I was looking for. It seems like it is not geared towards those of us who are having difficulty finding restaurants with ANY vegan options, but instead for people who are surrounded by vegan and vegetarian restaurants and just need help choosing which one.
Disappointing, because I am aware of the one all-vegan restaurant in my town, but I wouldn’t necessarily know which places would have a vegan item or two on their menu. It seems this app would be helpful if you lived in a large, vegan-friendly city.

Edit 2: after reading the other reviews, it looks like they’re no longer allowing submissions for restaurants that serve meat? That would explain why nothing was coming up for me. If this is true, that completely erases the functionality of the app in my mind. Not all of us have the luxury of getting to eat at all vegan and vegetarian restaurants! Sad.

Developer Response

Hi Luna, that's completely untrue. We moderate all submissions and accept meat restaurants on a case-by-case basis. Sometime we list places with offensive meat offerings and only a couple vegan options, especially when there is little else nearby, there are many reasons.

We do, however, have certain guidelines that we have developed over the years which we show on our Add a listings page. If you have any restaurants which you feel should be added to HappyCow based upon our criteria, please consider adding them. See in-app link in the Help tab at the bottom or the add listing button on our site. In this way, you can help others and others can help you to find vegan food in places which have fewer options. We do our best to list such veg option restaurants, but we do sometimes miss some.

Also, we are currently in the process of adding thousands of nation-wide chains and will soon have a filter in the app for them.

Please consider emailing us with some details if there are places you feel are missing and vegan-friendly: ios@happycow.net - Thank you!
