Description

Joining the Citizen safety network will give you instant access to information about crimes near you. The Citizen technology will send you real-time push notifications to alert you of crimes that are close by. Users write to us every day telling us how Citizen is changing how they engage with their neighborhoods. Citizen notifications have prompted users to evacuate burning buildings, deter school buses from departing a school during a nearby terrorist attack, or even rescue their neighbor’s baby locked in a hot car.

You may receive a notification of a crime in progress before the police have responded. This app is meant to keep you safe and protect you. Please use Citizen responsibly.

Real-time Alerts: Location-based notifications help you avoid potentially dangerous situations.

Live Video: Go live from the scene or watch an incident unfold from different angles.

Incident Details: Receive continuous updates on incidents and chat with other Citizen users.

Location-hungry app

I’ve allowed this app access to my location while the app is running, not always. It used to be fine with this: I continued to get alerts for things that happened in the place I last opened the app (which is what I want - I look at recent crime near home, from home, but not near work or from work, 20 miles away). The app had a little notice at the bottom of the screen asking me to change my location setting, but it didn't take up much space or interfere with my use of the app. Recently, the app is becoming more and more obnoxious about asking me to change its location access. It’s notable that the developer has evolved the “give me your location always!” screens to be more frequent, cover more of the screen, and be less easily dismissed. As of this version, it covers the whole screen and a dismiss icon only shows up after the notice has been on screen several seconds.

Other than that major impediment to usability, I like the app. I live in the city and appreciate knowing where and when crime has been happening lately. I do wish the default radius were something I could configure, but that’s not a huge problem.

Cute idea for the paranoid 2000s

In many ways this is a clever app. Nice graphics, pretty well laid out and it does notify on seemingly random events in random areas. It does this with a startling alert that isn’t configurable, so it jumps your adrenaline to the roof to let you know that 7 miles away from you a hobo yelled at someone pestering them.

Basically I leave it installed hoping they will tone it down and eventually get more granular and give better options for alerts. Let ME pick the sound, let me choose the areas I’m interested in and the “level” of attention I should give it (I.e. gang of people shooting up the neighborhood vs. a person fell on sidewalk). Maybe an alert for the area like Tsunami or nuclear warning. Or for real crime- an alert for someone kicking out tenants so they can list their home as a hotel on AirBnB.

Right now it’s a blunt tool with the associated problems of being a blunt tool. Some good crime voyeurism to be had for sure, but without much relevance to people’s day-to-day it will eventually fade away.

Fun and informative.

UPDATE: The always-on location requirement has become even more intrusive (ie you can't use the app without allowing always-on location access). One star and deleted.

======

Woulda been a 5-star review but the app just started prompting for always-on location access EVERY time you open the app. Not cool. Annoying enough that I'm now considering deleting an app that I tend to check on a daily basis.

EDIT:
The developer was kind enough to respond to my review clarifying that they do indeed perform the action that I've claimed is intrusive and annoying. But it's ok because they promise to protect my privacy in the process.

Hi there,

If your settings aren't properly configured, you will see a reminder to update them. You can dismiss that modal to continue into the app, but it will appear again the next time you open Citizen.
