The VisTimer was developed to provide a gentle implementation of time imposed limits. It utilizes an animated shrinking pie chart to depict elapsed time. Visual thinkers, especially when they are children, have difficulty conceptualizing time. Being able to see the changing pie chart as time passes makes it easier to understand time and duration. It is easy to explain to a child that when the circle is completely gone, an activity is finished or a task must be completed. There is an Early Warning preference setting to indicate the timer is approaching completion. This provides a gentle reminder to prepare and set expectations. Even the color of the pie chart can be customized to a calming favorite color. Sometimes allowing a child to participate in selecting these preferences creates a sense of ownership and commitment. The VisTimer can also operate in Lock Mode, where all settings are locked after the timer is started. This imparts it with a higher sense of authority and detaches its consequences from you.
The low stress animated circle combined with restful colors and gentle sounds also make it ideal for timing relaxation activities such as meditation and yoga.
What's New in Version 1.1
1. Improved display graphics for iPad.
2. New option for a large digital display with custom colors.
3. New option to disable the device sleep mode when the timer is running.
4. Additional alarm sounds.
5. Bug fix: alarm sometimes did not play from the begining of the track.
Special education must!
"When is snack time? When is recess? How long till P.E?"
"We'll, let's check our clock."
For a year this has been a great tool for my special-needs students. They love to choose their own color and they will often ask to see the timer. It's reassuring for the kids to see how close their chosen activity is. It's great for tracking reward times (durations) in an Applied Behavior setting.
Would love to have several saved settings from a menu to choose from.
I really like this app. With the visual reminder, variety of sounds and the early warning, it'll be super to use in my classroom to help my students manage their time during tasks.
However the iPad cover really only provides a reliable stand in landscape mode. This app only runs in portrait. PLEASE add landscape support!!!! This is crucial for use around children!
Another nice-to-have option would be the ability to have two or three early warnings for longer tasks.
A good meditation timer
I am pleased to have found a simple meditation timer. The pie chart feedback is clear and exactly what I need for meditation.
The three low C bells provide a perfect ending for my session.
Improvements: for meditation many of us like to begin our session with a sound. Please have the option to play a sound when the session starts.
Also a dollar 99 seems high for a basic app like this. But it is what I needed so I paid for it.
