The new amazing icon app is designed by Pablo J. Malacara vonwhites.co
Visual Differ compares side-by-side folders and files using colors to visually show differences. From the Folder view it's possible to make operations on folders and files like copying or deleting.
It's possible to compare quickly directories choosing base folders from the context menu. Using the File Filter feature is possible to hide from visualization specific files like .git, .svn directories or the omnipresent .DS_Store files.
The folders comparison can be done using different techniques from the fastest "compare only date and size" to the fine-grained byte-by-byte comparison.
The files comparison is done using the unix diff command this choice makes the result quick, standard and reliable.
It's possible to save work sessions then quickly reopen them to compare directories hierarchies or directly two specific files.
Ratings and Reviews
Using it since years
I have been using this app for years, always installed it again when I switched computers, definitely one of my essentials. I use it both for folder diff as well as file diffing.
Would be 5 if inline text diff supported
Great app. I would rate 5 star if inline text diff supported. Sometimes it’s just too much to save text to two files.
Does exactly what I need it to
There are some things that annoy me about the interface on this app—such as that I often have to open the help file to remind myself what all the color coding means; hover tips would be a nice addition—but overall it's exactly what I was looking for when I set out to find a file- and folder-diffing app. Now that I have it, I use it probably every other day.
Just now, for instance, I used it to figure out the difference between two versions of an InDesign document. It required a bit of prep to get human-readable results—export each file as IDML, unzip each package—but with that done, I was able to diff the folders and then the mismatched XML files within them, to find the exact characters within a 300-page book that had been changed. Two days ago, I used VisualDiffer to compare half a dozen pairs of folders containing hundreds of images each. It let me quickly identify the files that were missing or mismatched.
It's fast, configurable, and gets the job done. One of the best-spent five bucks I've dropped into the App Store.
With Family Sharing set up, up to six family members can use this app.
