Description

**For reasons outside my control the watch app can be slow communicating with Amazon's Alexa servers (see below)**

Voice in a Can brings Alexa to your Apple Watch, iPhone and iPad. It works on your watch standalone, without needing your phone and can be launched from a complication. You can use a Siri Shortcut to launch the app and start speaking, just by raising your wrist to your mouth on Apple Watch.

Amazon restrictions mean that not all content can be supported, for example audio books, music, podcasts and some flash briefings.

The fastest results are obtained when your phone is not nearby, letting your watch connect directly to the internet over WiFi or cellular.

If your phone is nearby then the watch channels all communications via your phone, over a slow bluetooth connection. If your phone doesn't have a great connection to the internet then that will also slow things down. This can lead to long waits while the app initiates a connection with Amazon's servers on the watch.

What’s New

Version 1.0.18

o Siri Shortcuts are supported. On your phone you can register a word or phrase used to launch the app, such as "Voice in a Can" or "Alexa";
o On your watch you can raise the watch to your mouth and say the same word to launch the app, you'll feel a gentle tap when it is ready. It might take a few minutes for the shortcut to sync from your phone to your watch (outside my control);
o All complication types are now supported (all the old ones, and the new ones);
o The font size used on the watch has been toned down a little.

Dues not work well

I have a recent apple watch. I was hoping this app would be like the reverb app for the iPhone. The reverb app is super simple to use and just works. The voice in a can app needs a lot of improvement. Everytime you start it there is a process it needs to go through before you can use it. First it needs to start. Then synchronize. Then authenticate. Then it often tells me that I seem to be offline when I am not. Then it just started listening with no interaction from me and then I have to tap it to get it to stop listening. By this time in the process I have been standing and starting at my watch for about 45 seconds to a full min. I could have used my phone to do what I want.

When the app finally does receive a command, it is often not able to execute it. I hope this app improves since I paid for it.

How quickly it works depends enormously on the speed of your internet connection and how recent your watch is.

It should work much faster when your phone isn’t nearby, because then all communication isn’t channeled via the phone, and instead the watch can talk directly over WiFi.

I’m sorry the experience is so poor for you. If you can send me a log/feedback per the faq on voiceinacan.com I’d be happy to see if there is something else going on.

To slow to be useful in the wild

I had great hopes for this app when I heard about it. I have a large number of home automation devices and I use Alexa frequently to turn on light, change thermostat, control my entertainment system. But I found the app even on my own WiFi so incredibly slow that in the time it takes to get it to even start. I can grab my phone from my pocket, pop up the app, and click on what I want to do before my watch complication is even ready. The startup process for the app needs to be a lot faster to make it worthwhile. It literally takes close to minute to start the watch app. All the while you have to keep the app active or the whole process of starting it has to start again!

Love the app, but the latest update now makes it inoperable on the warch

To be clear, I love this app and that how actually provides a workaround to connect to Alexa when I’m not actually near my Echo devices. That said, the latest update within the past few days has made the watch app inoperable. While I can use the awake word such as “voice in a can” when lifting my arm up and speaking into the watch, the app constantly stays in a state of “Starting” on the watch screen and never goes to “Listening” mode. I have tried killing the app a few times on the watch and restarting in an attempt to troubleshoot The issue, but ,unfortunately,the same issue remains.

Developer Response ,

Hi Matt,

Do you still have this issue? Did you get a chance to reinstall the app on the watch? I’ve not had anyone else report this and would like to get to the bottom of it.

Thanks,
Damian

Could you email me at damian@voiceinacan.com. I’d really like to work with you to resolve this startup issue if you are up for that. I’ve not had anyone else report it. I’m constantly updating the faq but I don’t think anything applies in your case https://voiceinacan.com/ios-faq/
