LET’S FACE IT, IF YOU ARE A BIRDER AND LOVE YOUR IPAD THERE IS NO PERFECT APP FOR YOU. UNTIL NOW.
Every birding app on the market is designed for iPhone; the iPad is just an afterthought. This giant sinkhole has finally been filled with WAITE’S GUIDE TO BIRDS OF AMERICA FOR THE IPAD. This app was designed from the very start to take full advantage of the iPad’s beautiful Retina display; its magnificent 10-inch screen and its remarkable 4th generation processing power. Here are just a few of the features of this incredible new app:
▶ Smart Search Engine. Uses our patented Smart Attribute and Value Elimination (SAVE) algorithm, which results in lightning fast and foolproof bird identification.
▶ Portrait and Landscape Modes. Works equally well in portrait or landscape mode.
▶ HD Illustrations. All illustrations are in high resolution: 1200 x 1500 portrait and 1500 x 1000 landscape.
▶ HD Photos. An increasing number of photographs are in high resolution. These have a special graphic icon identifying them so you can zoom in and see the amazing details.
▶ Field Marks! Now all illustrations have a Field Mark layer that can be turned on and off. This is a great way to learn the important identifying marks for specific species. We even tell you what similar bird you might get it confused with.
▶ Topographic maps. All species have topographic maps, which show and describe specific feather groups for the head, body and flight.
▶ Zoomable Images. All photos and illustrations are fully zoomable inside their frame and can be made full screen.
▶ Advanced Slideshow. Lets you select photos or illustrations, see photos from specific photographers, and control exactly which species you wish to study. Makes a great presentation of your photography portfolio.
▶ My Photos allows you to import your photos and assign them to any species account. Can be used by the slideshow.
▶ Dropbox backup for Notes, Favorites Lists and Photos.
▶ Six view modes: standard Compact, Icon, Thumbnail and Gallery and two new modes Large Thumbnail and Large Gallery.
▶ Help Me Identify a Bird Forum. App connects directly to our whatbird.com forum where experts are standing by to help you ID a bird you can't find with the search engine.
▶ You can leave Comments on the species pages to share with other birders.
▶ Compatible with iBird Journal. Directly links to iBird Journal app from any species page. Journal will open with the sighting form already filled out. You can embellish the form and return to the exact same species page you started in WGBA.
SINCE WAITE'S GUIDE IS FREE THERE IS JUST NO REASON NOT TO TRY IT OUT AND SEE THAT IT'S THE BIGGEST CHANGE IN BIRD APPS SINCE WE CREATED THE CATEGORY IN 2008 WITH THE APPLE COMMERCIAL WE HAVE AN APP FOR THAT.
What's New in Version 1.1
▶ New in Version 1.1 - Birds Around Me. This first update has one of the coolest features we've ever created called "Birds Around Me" or BAM for short. BAM displays a match list of the species most likely to be found within a radius centered at your GPS location. You can control the size of the radius in miles as well as the season of the year.
▶ We've also added 18 endemic species only found in Hawaii. Locate them by selecting the "Location Common" attribute and select the value "Hawaii Endemic".
▶ We've updated the illustrations for 29 species! You can quickly find these illustrations using the "Illustration Update" attribute which is found at the bottom of the Search engine attribute list. Select 6.3 to see these 29 new illustrations
Waite's Guide is the be all, end all app for bird identification. Finally, it is easy to identify the bird in the bush, all you need is a good look at it then enter the characteristics that you noticed into the app. It will narrow the choices down to the few that match and allow you to nail the ID. Another plus are the illustrations that show different views, such as overall profile, closeup of distinct markings, and bird in flight. And high quality photos from professionals or contributors are top notch. Also, the new Birds Around Me feature seems to be a big plus, helping to narrow possibilities for identification, or even to give an incentive to go looking for a new bird that you have not seen in this season, this location, or ever.
Two minor things I would hope to see in near future versions: better illustration/photo coverage for females and immatures; and if
I browse by sorting Last, First, then go to home screen, then back to browse, the sort order should remain the same, not revert to First, Last.
Thanks Mitch Waite and the gang, the 'Waite' for the perfect bird app is over!
Awesome set of Apps
The Mitch Waite Group is a phenomenal group of creative and effective software developers for birding. The iBird Pro and WGBA are joined together by the iBird Journal app. Using your iPhone with iBird Pro in the field, studying and learning from WGBA at home and using it in the field if you like taking your iPad in the field (i find it to be too big, but others don't) with the ability to easily capture/list your sightings with iBird Journal. What a great set of apps. If I had three wishes that would top it all off they would be 1) be able to use the camera and/or pictures to identify birds. 2) Expand iBird Pro to Europe as well, specifically France, Belgium, & Germany. 3) Expand Waite's Guide to Birds of Europe - or since I'm wishing - Waite's Guide to Birds of the World. They say always leave them wanting more, and the quality and craftsmanship of these apps definitely leaves you wanting more. Thanks for the great set of apps you have created.
Everything I want and more
This is the first iPad app I have bought specifically for birding and I am blown away. The use of GPS to filter out the most common birds likely to be around me is brilliant and the search system works very well. I've been able to identify several birds in my yard that had me stumped for the last year including the Bushtit, Chestnut-back Chickadee and Dark-eyed Junco (gray headed variety).
Oh one more thing…the field marks are an outstanding addition. If I could make a suggestion I would really like to see more female photos and illustrations. You have one artist, I don't know his name, but his work goes far beyond anything I have seen in a field guide including the epic (and expensive) National Geographic Folio Edition.
