Let's face it if you are a birder and love your iPad there is no perfect iPhone app for you. Almost every publisher puts lipstick on their iPhone interface so they can say it works on the larger iPad screen - the iPad is just an afterthought.

This giant mistake has been solved with WAITE’S GUIDE TO BIRDS OF AMERICA FOR THE IPAD. This app was designed from the very start to take full advantage of the iPad’s beautiful Retina display with a magnificent 10-inch screen and a remarkable 4th generation processor. Here are just a few of the features of this incredible new app:

▶ Percevia (TM) Smart Search Engine. Uses our patented Smart Attribute and Value Elimination (SAVE) algorithm, which results foolproof bird identification.
▶ Portrait and Landscape Modes. Works equally well in portrait or landscape mode.
▶ HD Illustrations. All illustrations are in high resolution: 1200 x 1500 portrait or 1500 x 1000 landscape.
▶ HD Photos. An increasing number of photographs are in high resolution. HD photos have a special graphic icon identifying them so you can zoom in and see the amazing details.
▶ Field Marks. All illustrations have a Field Mark layer, which can be turned on and off. Learn the important identifying marks for specific species.
▶ Topographic maps which show and describe specific feature groups for the head, body and flight.
▶ Advanced Slideshow. Lets you select photos or illustrations, see photos from specific photographers, and control exactly which species you wish to study. Makes a great presentation of your photography portfolio.
▶ My Photos allows you to import your photos and assign them to any species account and can be used by the slideshow.
▶ Dropbox backup for Notes, Favorites Lists and Photos.
▶ Six view modes: standard Compact, Icon, Thumbnail and Gallery and two new modes Large Thumbnail and Large Gallery.
▶ Help Me Identify a Bird Forum. App connects directly to our whatbird.com forum where experts are standing by to help you ID a bird you can't find with the search engine.
▶ Leave Comments on the species pages to share with other birders.

SINCE WAITE'S GUIDE IS FREE THERE IS JUST NO REASON NOT TO TRY IT OUT AND SEE THAT IT'S THE BIGGEST CHANGE IN BIRD APPS SINCE WE CREATED THE CATEGORY IN 2008 WITH THE APPLE COMMERCIAL "WE HAVE AN APP FOR THAT".

Enjoy the App

I first downloaded this app to my iPad II when it was initially released. Up until then I had been using iBird.

I can truthfully say that every bird I've identified since then has been using this app (though I confirm using other sources such as field guides and continue to observe the bird behavior). I especially like the Birds Around Me feature as it greatly reduces the number of birds I need to search through. The bird sounds feature have helped cement identification.

I'd give it 5 stars but for the fact that not once have I been able to identify a bird using the standard search function. The problem may be mine, but I've tried my upmost best to use it many times, but no go.

I've had but one major issue and that was when the notes stored on drop box, along with the app, were installed on my iPad Pro. For many days (weeks even) the notes would not populate. I was crazy bummed as I track our fall/winter spring/summer residents in great detail there. I gathered that the issue was software related and hopped it resolve itself. It did.

I don't use the other app anymore. Well, occasionally if my only device available is my iPhone. Would be way cool if the iPad version included one for the phone as well with the original purchase price. I'm usually on the tablet though, so it's not that big a deal for me.

Enjoy :)

Can not upgrade to full version!

This would be a great app if you could upgrade to the full version! I paid for the full version but the app would not complete the upgrade so I had to request a refund. I contacted the developer and they said that they knew of the problem. I contacted them again after about two weeks but no response so I requested a refund from Apple! iBird is a fantastic app on the iPhone but this one is disappointment!

I wish it worked

It's a nice looking app, but... The only feature that allows you to save a log of birds viewed doesn't work.

You have to go through "Dropbox" and EVERY TIME this app updated you lose all your journals. Dropbox doesn't synch with it either. I see the file in my Dropbox account but for the last several updates when you log into Dropbox it just freezes the app.

What a shame. It's a nice looking app, but the reason I got it was to save birds I have viewed in areas and it doesn't. It will, till the next update. Then you lose it all.

It's been this way for a long long time.
