Could have been great
A lot of the dungeons provide a challenge. You stand a real chance of losing some characters. And then there are the times where necromancers and vampires spawn back to back. This isn't a challenge, it's literally a slaughter. Normally, that might seem like hyperbole, but, no, when a single necromancer can disable your entire party each turn with one spell (that has no counter, works at any distance, and doesn't even require line of sight) and simultaneously raise 4 or 5 new enemies, and then, because you literally can't take any actions, eventually (though, really it's usually just a turn or two) a vampire spawns with 4 attacks per turn who can ALSO disable your entire party with one spell...that's a slaughter. I actually get annoyed that they don't kill my characters faster when this happens (which is every 4th or 5th dungeon once you get to 3rd level) because it's boring to just hit "end turn" over and over as my characters literally can't take any actions. Boring and stupid ruining an otherwise really nice game.
Great game for iPad
Good: Gameplay, music, inventory system, quests
Bad: Starting area too small, too expensive for extra characters, limited replay value
I rarely play games on iPad. They're not THAT much fun and I have PC. Yet one of the reasons I bought my iPad was to play this game, as it was not available on other devices at the time.
The game itself is great for what you get with the initial purchase. It follows the rules of the original game almost exactly. I commend the designers for recognizing a good thing. All too often when a tabletop game is ported to digital, something gets lost in translation. That is NOT the case here.
The bad part is that the starting area only gives you about 15 hours of gameplay. After that you have to buy other areas to explore. That would be alright, except after that time, the game becomes a little repetitive.
The extra characters you can buy are overpriced, and after you buy them, do you really want to grind through the same game again (assuming you didn't buy them as your starting characters)?
In summary, a MUST own game for iPad. iPhone too small to really enjoy this game. Do not need the extra content to have fun.
Warning: Forces Push Notifications with no opt-out
If you value your privacy & control over your own device, don't waste 5$ on this game which entitles itself to spam your notification center. I guess this goes hand in hand with the blatant monetization attempts others have complained about.
In order to launch the game, it forces you to respond to the standard push notification requester, but with only an OK button, no choice. In System Preferences, the app icon itself only results in a blank page. In the Notifications settings, it does not appear at all. The in-game settings do not include a choice either. I am not aware of any other options.
I'm surprised this is not some kind of violation of the App Store requirements, fortunately so far it's the only (legit?) app like this I have come across.
To me this unacceptable behaviour, especially for a PAID(!) app, so this game is DOA for me regardless of any further merits and I will request a refund. This review is mostly to prevent others concerned with this from wasting their money like I did.
