Description

Finally, go running with your Apple Watch and your favorite podcast or exercise other sports and leave the iPhone at home.

[HOW TO]

3. Do 1. and 2. with other Pods if you like
4. Press most left Button in NavigationBar to start the transfer

WatchPlayer transfers podcast episodes directly to the Apple Watch. These can be played there without the direct connection with the iPhone. The podcast will be played in the background on the Apple Watch. The workout app or other apps on the watch can be started simultaneously.

On the iPhone, WatchPlayer is a complete podcast manager and player. In a directory you can put the sources of his favorite podcasts and can load individual episodes to the iPhone and if you would like to listen to them right there or directly to the Apple Watch for transfer.

To listen to the podcasts on the Apple Watch, you need Bluetooth headphones. Apple has recently taken the support of the built-in speaker of the Watch from the app developers. It also takes a long time until the episode on the watch was broadcast.

Since watchOS 4 / iOS 11, the WatchApp of audio apps on the clock * is automatically started *. There is no way to stop this. You can only set this behavior globally for all apps in the Watch settings. Therefore you can find on the second side of the WatchApp of WatchPlayer an iPhone Control Screen, via which you can remote control the iPhone's player.

The app does not use tracker or other analytical tools. All rights and obligations are the responsibility of the respective podcast authors.

Very useful app for listening from watch

yoboyo

Great to be able to transfer podcasts to watch directly and wirelessly from iPhone. I was enjoying this feature with Overcast but that app stopped providing this functionality. Would be great if (a) it allowed sorting of podcasts from iPhone or/and Apple watch and (b) podcasts could automatically Play next episode so that you don't have to stop running to move to next Podcast, and (C) there was an app complication for ease of access. Looking forward to next upgrade!

Update: I have now tried two alternative apps that also provide podcast playing directly from Apple Watch: Pod2Watch and WatchCast. WatchCast has a very nice user interface and design but remains quite buggy with transfers not completing or podcasts getting erased from Apple Watch. Pod2Watch is also quite buggy. Watch Player seems to be the most stable of the podcast watch apps and gets updated very regularly with new features being added (latest being the ability to download directly to the watch). Of the three aspects on my initial wish list above one has been implemented. It’s clear from all the developers of these apps that watch iOS is making it very difficult to provide the kind of service we are hoping for but WatchPlayer is a doing a great job. This is an indispensable app for joggers and it’s free...so many thanks and it is time for a donation.

I gave this app 2 stars just for having a great concept. However, one of the issues (which the developer is aware of) is that the downloads take a LONG TIME even for files that are 35MB so imagine any podcasts that are over 80MB-100MB. The second issue is once the download is done, I notice that the files become not readable after being transferred over with a “unknown metadata :( “ message which is super frustrating. Lastly, even when I finally get a podcast to download with no problems and I try to play it, I keep getting a message saying that my phone needs to enable Bluetooth to my  watch in order to play the file BUT ITS BEEN CONNECTING RHE WHOLE TIME DURING THE TRANSFER SMH. At the time of this review, the developer updated his app 3 days and I’ve updated both my iPhone and  watch to their latest software. This has potential but after a few months of being out, maybe it still needs to stay in beta first. I don’t want to sound harsh and I appreciate what the developer is doing. I just feel the app needs more polish to it.

Developer Response

WOW, what a great Review! Thanks. (1) -> When you mean by "time to download" the time that takes to transfer files, this is totally upon Apples Operating System. I just execute one command (really, just one) and the rest is up to the frameworks of Apple. So, this could get me one more star, right? :) (2) -> Because any data sending to the Apple Watch will take long(er) time, I decided to only read the Metadata from the file itself (this is an accepted standard, at least where I live). If the creator of your podcast is very very lazy, he/she did not attached these datas into the file. Perhaps a good thing to send the creator a note to do so? :) (3) -> Perhaps you were connected DURING the transfer, but not JUST BEFORE YOU PRESSED PLAY. Tricky thing this Bluetooth... (4) -> Beside all your frustration, you did not spend a dime for it, right? So, let me please keep this App in the App Store, OK? (5) -> It would save me a lot of my life, if there is a solution for it (from Apple or Marco Arment or ...). But up until now, there is none. So you and all the others brave brave users have to cope with my amateurish app, OR JUST NOT. :) Rgds, Peter

Download bug

robetraks

This is probably the most useful app on my Apple watch and it used to work pretty well until a few days ago. I am having trouble downloading podcasts on my iPhone. When downloading multiple podcasts at the same time, the download % keeps fluctuating on all the current downloads. I have tried deleting and installing the app again, but the problem is still there. I saw there was a download bug update, but I am not sure if you were talking about the same bug.
On the watch side also, there are some problems. I have faced this a few times now that I can’t stop the podcasts playing. If I try to change to another podcasts, the two overlap and I hear both of them. The only way to stop is to disconnect the headphones.
Not sure how to respond to your comment. I have experienced this problem on the following podcasts: radiolab, this American life, Freakonomics Radio.

Developer Response

Hi again, thanks. Found the bug which will be fixed in v3.0.3. This version is currently in review at Apple and will be released soon. Hi, sorry for the late reply. Which podcast exactly is causing this? Will look into it.
