What's New in Version 1.7.2
• Bug Fixes and optimizations
• Google Fiber users can now log in and watch ESPN's live sports and shows.
The old version deserves a 5/5 star rating, this new version does not. If everything is returned back to normal it's worth a 5 star rating. The issues you need to fix back to normal are:
You can't view the games scores from yesterday or days back like you used to...it just glitches out and loads a blank screen. Most importantly it is super complicated to access the calendar and select the old date compared to the previous version. For example when I missed the final scores of the nba games I could just select NBA and then right at the top of the screen the dates were in a nice neat line that I could select and move back a day to check old scores and jump ahead a day to see future games. I didn't have to load a calendar and do a bunch of extra steps like the new version requires. (I really don't want to even use this app anymore because of this.)
The next issue is after loading a specific nba game you used to be able to scroll down to the bottom and see the last 5 games for both teams. It was so convenient to see the Ws highlighted in a green color and the Ls were red. Now it is all the same color and really complicated to decipher.
There are other issues but these two are the most important to me. I can live with the other updates that I think were simply unnecessary, but not these two. You guys must have never heard the phrase "if it ain't broke don't fix it..."
Great App with an Annoying Oversight!
I use this app all the time and it offers nearly everything I need. The streaming works as well as you'd expect froma big name publisher, the UI is fairly intuitive and on my Retina mini, it snaps along quite well.
Now to my gripe:
When watching a game, there is extra space at the bottom that can be used to check stats, scores, and various other things. However, you can't check the score or stats for a game you're watching! Walk away and come back during a commercial? You have to wait until the game comes back to check the score (or check with another app). Wouldn't it be great if you could follow the stats for a game in real time while watching it? For now, you can't. The implementation is almost available but not quite there... Hopefully someone with some sway sees this and fixes it!
Performs but confuses
ESPN has an almost impossible task here. The quality of streaming is good, and the basic functionality of the app is good. But the extras we have become accustomed too are hard to integrate.
Can't check stats of a game you are watching, and commercial breaks kill the content. Live Interactive polls? Integrated Twitter option? Would love to see those involved.
Also this service is still relatively hard to get in many areas. Having the combination of cable/satellite and internet provider is hard to do. Perhaps have open trial weeks from time to time, like HBO, Showtime, and other PPV source sites do? Hard to know what your missing when so many never have a chance to see it.
