Bug Fixes and Optimizations
very convenient app
love this app and opportunity i am afforded to watch a game while on the train (to see another game), or see something live when i am not home (like ncaa div I soccer tournament). even though screen is small, like with my iphone, the clarity is very good. feel like i am in a jetson's cartoon from the future...watching the tv from my phone. just need to get a "smart-watch" so i can be george jetson and watch tv while working at spacely enterprises....the future is now. this app also was great to have while watching men's world cup this past summer. i was in the hospital following surgery, and the games were not shown on the hospital cable network, so i could watch the games in my room. great convenience when you want to see something live. app is very easy to use, but could use a "remember me" selection so that you have the option of hooking back up with your same network/password configuration.
Have to restart app following iOS notification; place in video lost.
Great content, especially cricket, but the app is flaky, especially when playing videos.
Since many of the events I watch are on a time zone eight hours away, much of my viewing is of videos, and this app is rather fragile when playing them. One example of this is the loss of place in a video when an iOS notification comes in, which is very frustrating. Pasted below is my most recent report of this problem to ESPN.
VIDEO CANNOT BE RESTARTED AFTER AN IOS NOTIFICATION
Any notification, such as battery at 10%, stops a video from playing.
However, instead of the video being paused and readily resumed, it is placed in a state that results in the following message when resumption is attempted:
"Unable to Play Video
The video is having trouble loading. Please try again."
The only way I have found to resume the video is to remove the app from memory, start it up again, start the video from the beginning, and then painstakingly use trial and error to find the point in the video at which viewing ceased.
Not only is this time-consuming, but the user may jump too far forward when trying to find the right place, and as a result see the score, thus ruining the viewing experience.
This problem has existed for many months on several different versions of iOS and it occurs on iPhones and iPads. I have reported this problem before, but the bug is still not fixed.
Very close to perfect
Now that subscribers of DirecTV were finally added as customers able to use this app, we're able to use WatchESPN instead of something like SlingBox to view all of the truly industry-standard channels and programming that ESPN has been providing since 1979. That everything they provide is consolidated into one central location is really the best thing about the app; with it, I actually consume the majority of what I watch of ESPN on either my iPad(s) or my iPhone now. My TV almost seems too straightforward or simple/basic now, my eyes seem to be searching for the other channels or options the app gives me, at least during commercials or when the game or programming gets boring! This app is an unquestioned necessity for the phones and tablets of absolutely ALL true sports fans.
