What's New in Version 1.10.1
Bug fixes and performance improvements
Great games. Great coverage. Worst experience.
You get ESPN and all the other channels under their umbrella: Longhorn Network, SEC, All the ESPNs. The quality of the video is great. You can also access other aired content like 30 for 30 docs. NFL Live and their hot takes. Etc.
The problem: the commercials stream perfectly, however, if you're watching a game, you have to have another app open to follow along. It freezes every 10-15 seconds back with garbled quality. Once the picture clears up to HD, it freezes again.
I know ESPN was late to the streaming game. I know they're losing subscribers and money - the just fired a bunch of on-air talent. But if they're doing this to force the viewer to buy a cable package just for ESPN, I'd rather just follow along on "the SCORE" app and listen to the game on the radio. The SCORE app provider real time stats and is only a few seconds behind the actual game. C'mon ESPN. Invest the money you're "saving" into your streaming service. This is the future. If you don't, the games are going to basic channels and antennas.
Glitchy with too little functionality
It's great to be able to access all games on espn, live and replay, and to be able to rewind and fast forward without constraints imposed by other streaming services. That said, the app is buggy. It freezes a lot. Many times it just doesn't respond when I select a game..and it takes multiple close outs and restarts of the app to get it to work. Been this way for years now. Second, the functionality ought to have improved in the years this has been in operation. It doesn't save your place, so when you close the app or it freezes, you have to hunt it back down. It doesn't seem to easily offer to save certain preferred channels/sports/etc. I'm always having to dive into menus to look for soccer games. Probably a lot of user interface/function could be improved. Also would be great if this app were to be launch able from my DIRECTV app rather than forcing manual open of this app.
Never ever reviewed/rated an app until now...
Apple MacBook. Newest PlayStation 4. Newest Roku Stick. Apple TV. iPhone. 30 plus MBPS. Ethernet connection instead of wifi. Regardless of what device I use, the WatchESPN app has been nothing but disappointing and unreliable.
I work for the biggest electronics retailer in the U.S. and I cannot recommend this app to a customer without warning of my own personal testimony ever again. The resolution ESPN has when working is great. But what is resolution when your event freezes LITERALLY every 10 seconds? Or when the resolution is at full HD only 10% of the time your event is on? The last game I just watched was a very good one, but not an important one to me and it warranted my first review of an app. If this continues to happen even during the NBA Finals while the Cavaliers play or during me keeping track of my progress on Streak for the Cash, I will literally cancel my cable completely.
But what do I matter, right? I know....
