It almost makes tracking fun!
The biggest obstacle to weight loss is writing down everything you eat. This app makes that so much easier and (almost) fun! Start typing in a brand name and the app is already finding it along with its SmartPoints value. Now you just need to select it and it's added to your tracker. The app keeps an easy-to-read dashboard of your day: what you've eaten, how many points you've consumed, how many you have left for the day and how many flex points are remaining for the week. It also has a barcode scanner that scans barcodes on product packaging and reports its point value. I use this in the Supermarket all the time. The app shows you a bar chart of your weight loss progress and generates automatic messages to congratulate you or keep you motivated. Finally, it also has a Facebook-like community where other Weight Watchers members share their stories and photos. That part of the app includes a widget that makes it easy to show before and after photos. Be careful, though - spending time in this community gets addictive and before you know it, you've spent 30 minutes reading people's posts! This app is 100 times better than earlier versions. I'm finding it essential to losing weight (and I just reached my goal weight last week, so it works!). I have not experienced the issue other people reported about needing to log in all the time.
Good, but needs major TWEAK-Please give FULL, IMMEDIATE access to favorite foods.
I've used mobile apps for food logging for years and WW is pretty good, but could be so much better. When I compare it to SuperTracker from the U.S. government FDA department- (which provides daily nutrient counts and lots more), it seems pretty basic. Maybe, it's harder to set up something similar to SuperTracker, because calculating SmartPoints is the priority with the WW app, as well as the online site. So now, I'll address my major cause of frustration with the mobile app.
The WW mobile app needs a major tweak: add FULL immediate access to favorite foods from A-Z. The online site doesn't have this problem.
As of this writing- when you try and add a favorite food, only A-B foods appear initially; as screen is refreshed, the rest of food is appears alphabetically in tiny increments (some of C, refresh again, rest of C; then a bit of D words, and so it goes). At this rate, I get frustrated and go back to the main screen and type in my food and search the regular way. The whole idea of the 'favorites' link is to save time. Currently, that's true -as long as I don't try and enter a food that is at the end of the alphabet, like ziti!
Need easier carb calculation
Love the app however what it lacks is a more simple ability to track carb intake. I am pre diabetic and my doctor has requested that my carb intake be no more than 150 carbs a day. No problem when it comes to each individual food in the database. Big problem when it comes to creating a recipe or meal. Also when choosing a recipe from the database. It is just too time consuming to go into each ingredient and calculate the carbs. Please make improvements on this and I would most certainly rate this app 5 stars. I gave up trying to calculate my carbs individually. I have ran across several people in the meetings who are diabetic and how much of a pain it is to count carbs. Please give the diabetic population consideration. Sometimes weight loss alone is not enough. Keeping our carbs in check is also of importance.
