This App Does Not Do What It Says It Does
I am a freelance graphic artist and constantly download new fonts to use on client work. Many times, clients will request a specific font based off of an image but do not know the name of the font. I often times have to search for fonts that are similar to the one the client is looking for, so this app seemed like a great solution. Only problem is, the app works nothing like advertised. It has the hardest time recognizing the simplest of fonts and if I can ever even get through the process of identifying letters in the picture with it recognizing letters and not the space between them, the recommended fonts aren't even close to resembling the original font I was trying match. I have downloaded this app multiple times over the past few years to see if it has been improved or to see if it will just so happen to work for me this one time, but I always end up with the same disappointing results every time.
This actually worked better than the website or two I've tried using to identify fonts. One suggestion though! On the page where it has your image at the top and all the found fonts to scroll through to decide which is right... Once you start scrolling your original image also scrolls up. It would help if our original stayed fixed at the top and the selections scrolled up/behind it so it's easier to match them side by side. Otherwise, great app!
Search always returns fonts that look nothing...
...like what you upload. At all.
For example, I took a clean picture of a font similar to Times Roman. I uploaded it per instructions and was treated to returned matches that looked like children's handwriting, wingdings, and symbols and big blocky letters. None of the search returns look anything like my sample script. Nothing at all.
I don't know what it was doing other than returning a random sampling of random fonts. There seem to be no algorithms running to match the sample font to anything other than the letter that was typed into the box. It doesn't match the "look" of the font, just the letter itself with a variety of fonts.
I deleted the app after giving it a few tries and coming up with the same unusable returns every time.
A font finder app is a great idea. If it worked, I would be willing to pay a buck or two for it. I'm always on the look-out for fonts I can use on the web site I manage and publications I create. I hate scrolling endlessly through font sites.
