I first got a PodTracker — then got a Whistle
I love it so far. I had a PodTracker before this, which rarely worked. Nothing is more frustrating than hitting “locate” and it not working. PodTracker uses a 2g T-mobile network and it’s crap in many areas. But enough about them.
Whistle so far finds my dog really well in our rural Virginia area. I’ve read some of the negative reviews. It helps if you know how the product is designed to balance issues out. For example, battery life versus location updates. Keeping GPS and cellular radio going is going to drain battery quickly. So having that base station communicate to the tracker using low power bluetooth when in range allows the tracker to go into a low power mode to conserve battery power. This is pretty smart, but it will introduce a small delay when the dog leaves that area until it powers back up the GPS and cellular connection. On the other hand, if the dog is never near the base station, of course the battery is going to drain a lot quicker, because the GPS and cell radio is always on.
Whistle ruined a great product
I have owned the Tagg tracker for 4 years and was happy with the product and app. The app alerted me quickly if my cat escaped the yard. Since Whistle bought out Tagg, the app is just Facebook for pets and the time it takes to notify me of an escape is ridiculously long. This is purely a social media app. I don't care how long my dog rested each day! I just want to be able to locate him if he gets out of the yard. Also, the app is inaccurate. It texts me every night around 9 pm that my pet has just met his activity goal for the day, even though he's been in the house and sleeping for the past three hours!! It routinely shows me almost 50% battery and then 2 hours later notifies me the battery is low! Whistle should stick to activity monitoring and let someone else handle tracking our pets which was what Tagg was designed to do & did well. What a waste of a great product!!
Ok but could be better
I have had Whistle for almost 2 months. I got it on the recommendation of someone who had it as Tagg plus I was seduced by their end of year sale. First off the battery doesn't last 2 days. I use it on 2 livestock guardian dogs so I want to keep up with them 24/7 and there is no way for them to be "50feet" from the base. Second it is bad at updating their activity. I use to see when there are predators around. It will go 24 hours and not update even when I ask for location and it should update. I'm not sure where the battery life goes if it's not updating. Third the responds time to being out of area is abysmal. I have paid for a years worth of service so I hope they can fix these in that time or I just won't renew.
