I studied art in a more rural area of New England and thus I was often unable to see important works of art in person. This app gives more isolated artists and art lovers the ability to search for and see such works without having to navigate through low-resolution results on image search sites.
Sadly, it's missing a few of my favorite artists (Francis Bacon and Joseph Cornell to name a couple) but this in probably more in part due to the intellectual property and legal nonsense that hinders the art world and not to the negligence of the app makers and community. Five stars to ya!
Great for simple browsing
This app is very helpful for quickly finding paintings by some great artists. Some important painters are conspicuously missing from this catalog. But overall, it's a great resource to start your discovery of Western painting.
Besides artist and title, each painting comes with info on its year, genre, style, and even size, but sometimes the year, and the museum or collection houses the artwork, is missing. But I appreciate to have a great deal of paintings catalogued for free, without ad distractions, on a user friendly simple app.
The world of art in your hands
My grandmother would have loved this app SO much. She treasured an enormous book about western art, purchased just before WWII, that had color plates of all the featured art. I still have that book, but the color plates have dulled. This app is like walking through a virtual museum of the artists' careers. I do wish it would link to important online information, on a per art piece basis, if that piece warrants the link. Everyone who loves art should have this app. It's a great teaching tool, too.
