In this mixed media tribute, you'll experience the evolution of Sci Fi and a thorough look at "War of The Worlds" through many different prisms. You'll get a firsthand look at the original movie trailer from the 1950's, and a chance to listen to Orson Welles' 1938 radio narration. Breathtaking photos of the California windmills that inspired Steven Spielberg's version of the film, original comics by Classics Illustrated, and quotes from Sci Fi master, HG Wells, complete this fascinating portrait.
A Great Story
I enjoyed this app/publication on several levels. As an artist and photographer, I found the stark, abstract yet playful B&W images of the science-fiction-like wind machines to be very powerful and exceptionally well executed. The juxtaposition with H.G. Wells War of the Worlds continues the tongue-in-cheek tradition of that broadcast, reminding us that art can be both serious and fun. Without the broadcast of Well's program and it's subsequent influence on the artist as a child, who knows if Tyrell would have venture down the path of science fiction at all; so in that regard, this piece is a reminder of how so many different things can influence what an artist chooses to portray and how they snooze to do it. All in all, well worth the small investment for a thought-provoking and entertaining piece of work.
innovative, creative and thoroughly entertaining.
This app is jam packed with so much for such little cost, it doesn't seem right. To have the Orson Welles radio play, the trailer and film for the original version of war of the worlds, you can't rent just the movie for what you just paid for the whole Vook. On top of the movie and radio play, you have beautiful images from Tyrrell, that take the roadside monoliths we take for granted and turn them into menacing tripods of a new era. His images remind of us of Stephen Speilberg meeting David Lean. The additional background on science fiction, the essays and links to more resources on science fiction make this a totally worthwhile investment. How lucky the Santa Barbara Museum of Art is to have this benefit them.
Great package of B&W images & more
This is first VOOK. I had no idea what to expect and I was pleasantly surprised. I love B&W photography and to see how Tyrrell mixes his unique photography with the analogy of War of the Worlds is very creative.
The VOOK format gives me these historical audio and video clips in addition to text and beautiful images. Very fun.
