Remember the Star Trek computer? It's finally happening--with Wolfram|Alpha. Building on 25 years of development led by Stephen Wolfram, Wolfram|Alpha has rapidly become the world's definitive source for instant expert knowledge and computation.
Across thousands of domains--with more continually added--Wolfram|Alpha uses its vast collection of algorithms and data to compute answers and generate reports for you.
Parts of Wolfram|Alpha are used in the Apple Siri Assistant; this app gives you access to the full power of the Wolfram|Alpha computational knowledge engine. Domains covered by Wolfram|Alpha include:
STATISTICS & DATA ANALYSIS
Electricity & Magnetism
Animals & Plants
DNA Sequence Lookup
UNITS & MEASURES
DATES & TIMES
Current & Historical Weather
PLACES & GEOGRAPHY
PEOPLE & HISTORY
Historical Events, Periods & Countries
CULTURE & MEDIA
WORDS & LINGUISTICS
SPORTS & GAMES
Color Names & Systems
MONEY & FINANCE
Cost of Living
HEALTH & MEDICINE
Medical Test Data
FOOD & NUTRITION
WEB & COMPUTER SYSTEMS
(Wolfram|Alpha Pro capabilities such as file upload and personal
analytics are not yet available through this app.)
What's New in Version 1.7.4
- Bug fixes
A computer simulation of an idiot savant conference...
...delivered by a gaggle of geeks who clearly have no clue about lexicography, textbook/encyclopedia writing, and more generally the consistent structuring and polishing of any kind of human knowledge in a form that is not damaging to normally operating human brains.
All this thing delivers is unpredictable splatters of data, computation, bits of disjointed information, mostly in series of stranded items devoid of hyperlinks for easy navigation.
The raving inconsistency, coupled with the absurd user experience, is enough to make the crude, uneven, argumentative crowdsourcing of Wikipedia look superior by contrast, which is no small feat. If Wolfram Alpha were a restaurant, after ordering you would see a bowl of spaghetti flung at the nearest wall and then proudly framed in place.
I suggest two groups of searches for a quick sizing-up of this embarrassing failure (which goes a long way, incidentally, toward explaining why Siri is such a mess). One is a legal concept, the other is from psychology. Start with these, then dig for context and finally ask yourself if this is how you would like a bright kid to learn: “aggravating circumstance” and “chunking.” The former had me gaping in disbelief within seconds; the latter had me pining for the good old days before personal computing, the Internet, and the invention of Stephen Wolfram’s eponymous, vainglorious vehicle for vapidity.
I use it for chemistry
This app goes above and beyond. It shows you solutions AND the work in between. It balances chemical equations and shows you the skeletal structure for chemical compounds. I’m not just finding answers, I’m learning
Latest update breaks the app
The last update to this app broke the whole thing on ios 11.
