Very Interesting Approach to a "Travel Guide"
This application takes a completely different approach from a traditional published travel guide or even a travel app. Instead of a systematic, and often incomplete list of hotels, restaurants and popular tourist destinations, World Explorer provides a list of "places of interest" listed in Wikipedia associated with the destination you choose. Not only do you see the usual tourist destinations the list also includes some more obscure locations that might not turn up in traditional travel guides but might still be places that are very important to undertsanding that community. This works thanks to the breadth of Wikipedia.
The list of places of interest can be ordered alphbetically, by distance or by user rating. There's a Google Map window of the specific place you're viewing and a window with the Wikipedia article. You can get a Stephanie Hawking computer voice to read some of the articles to you. There's a listing of current local time and weather.
The app is simply assembling already-existing information but it does it well. A neat travel tool.
Helpful but Limited
While it has an astonishing amount of information, you have to want what it has -- it isn't very flexible in giving you what you want… and it isn't all that easy to use. It is hard to navigte back to a former screen, hard to navigate with the map because the map is so small and fixed in the Premium (while it was easy to enlarge and use in the other version -- go figure!) and the info from Wikipedia is great in depth as always, but should be only as intrusive as you ask, not sitting like a huge block of over-kill data with no easy way to move from screen to screen. What I am most disappointed in is the inability of use the little eye-level figure on the map effectively because driving the map is unstable, jumping in and out in scale, and here in the Premium version on so tiny a frame. The idea behind the app is really great and almost delivers but as it is now, I would really like my money back!
World Explorer is worth exploring
I was a little skeptical of a two-dollar app that made such big claims, but after exploring the world with it, I am amazed at the depth of content it has. I've visited many places around the world, and the information is (usually) accurate and deep. The photos are lovely, and the addition of street-view navegation is a bonus. There are a few mistakes in the maps, that are probably inherited from Google or Bing or wherever.
