WritePad is a text editor for iPhone that utilizes advanced handwriting recognition input for the English language as well as iPhone keyboard for text entry, and includes spell checker, context analyzer, and standard editing operations such as copy, cut, paste, etc. WritePad’s primary handwriting recognition-based input method integrated with the text editor and developed specifically for iPhone and iPod Touch. It recognizes cursive, PRINT, and mixed handwriting styles.

To enter the text you can simply write with your finger or a stylus (such as AluPen by just|mobile) on the iPhone screen in either landscape or portrait mode employing your own handwriting style. It also allows easily switching between the handwriting recognition and the standard iPhone keyboard.

The Shorthand feature offers a quick and simple way to insert often-repeated text and performs standard editing commands by writing the Shorthand name and drawing a circle around it. You can add new or modify Shorthands using the Shorthand Editor.

With WritePad you can create text documents and store them on your iPhone. The built-in HTTP server allows you to exchange files between iPhone devices connected to the same WiFi network, or to upload files onto the desktop PC using the Internet browser. You can also send emails directly from WritePad and use copy/paste to transfer text between WritePad and other applications. In addition, you can use the built-in interface to the Bing Translator to convert your documents to other languages.

Crashes on my watch

Towa Apple

I used to love using this app until it started crashing. Please Fix the the problem.

Good idea, bad execution

I tried this and two other programs, WritingPad (confusing names?) (A.K.A. ShapeWriter) and EasyWriter, to see what alternatives there were for text entry (EasyWriter isn't really an alternative method, just re-doing the keyboard). I thought that I might use one of them to write from then on, since each advertised more speed and accuracy than Apple's keyboard. However, I was not exactly pleased. In each of the three programs, I tried typing (or writing, or shaping) a test sentence: "The quick brown fox jumped over the lazy dogs." (for those of you who don't know, that sentence includes every letter in the English alphabet).
The result in WritePad:
The Thick brown fox jupex era the lazy cloys
The result in EasyWriter (using the Apple keyboard):
He quick brown fox jumped over the lazy dogs.
Obvoiusly, the reader can tell which is the more accurate. I should also point out that EasyWriter was the quickest and most accurate when both alternative programs promised speed as well as accuracy. Now, you may point out that the program has a button that allows you to make corrections, or choose from a list of alternatives. This is in fact true in both alternative programs. However, considering that these methods are already too slow, why would I want to waste time correcting the mistakes of the program?
Handwriting recognition worked on the Palm and Newton because they used a stylus, which does not apply here.

It's just great...

I am surprise to find that the app received such a low rating when I would rate it with a 4*. On closer examination, I notice most of the low rating is from the iphone version of the app. This is understandable because iphone screen is just too small to use the app and the capacitive stylus effectively. On the ipad, the app perform splendidly and I use it to replace all my other handwriting note taking apps [noteshelf, noteplus, penultimate] because it transcribes my ugly handwriting note to printed text accurately . I really wonder why apple doesn't allow this app to become an alternate method of input for all its app. It input accuracy is better than using the virtual keyboard and I find that I can input the text faster than typing using the handwriting panel. It automatically sync to dropbox so I can edit the doc on my PC with formatting [bold, underline, photo etc.]

The features I wish it would include in next update would be a voice recorder, simple editing such as list, font color and formatting.

ps. WritePad is better then Phatpad in recognizing handwriting even though the latter has a voice recording function.
