What's New in Version 8.1.0
The Newsroom app is the best way to stay up to date on news that matters to you and the conversation it starts. We update it on a regular basis to make sure you're always up to speed.
Terrible source for news, trashy tabloid
Wow, I can't believe this is being recommended as a replacement for Yahoo News Digest. They couldn't be more different!
YND was beautifully simple with 8 headlines that I could scan in a few seconds, or read further about each in 10 min, or read about the topic in depth over 30min. I loved the satisfying circle graphic after completing my 8 headlines and the reward of the quote. It was classy, simple, and the news stories were well-curated and well-written.
Newsroom on the other hand feels like a chaotic mess. All the headlines scream trashy tabloid and I'm honestly not sure if I'm looking at fake ad stories or real articles. They're all 'click-bait' and sensationalistic and after spending a few minutes trying to find some actual news, I got frustrated and overwhelmed by how messy it all felt. The few stories I did click on I felt myself getting dumber by the minute.
I'm not sure why Yahoo is shutting down YND but they should NOT be recommending this app as a replacement!
Will be deleting this app and I'll have to look elsewhere for my news.
No replacement for Yahoo News Digest
I am a nearly religious user of Yahoo News Digest and very sad to see it go in less than a week's time. What's worse is that this Yahoo Newsroom app I was told I should use instead sounds NOTHING like YND and the reviews back that up. The real irony is that when I went to download Newsroom, I found that I already had, at some point, downloaded it, tried it, deleted it, and forgotten all about it. It must have been pretty unimpressive for me to have no memory of it whatsoever. To be honest, if I wanted news "for the people, by the people" I would use the Reddit app or Facebook. But seriously, "people" are pretty unreliable (as some reviews of Newsroom seem to confirm). Come on, Yahoo--stop with the obvious mistakes! Keep YND going!! It is different from all the other news apps!! So sad to see it go!
This is not a news service, it's a schoolyard fight. Yahoo prints a few stories and then 90% of the content is comprised of comments in which vicious words and abuse are encouraged. There is no forum for reporting vile and abusive language. It seems like Yahoo intended to create name calling between conservatives and liberals. To make it even worse they allow anonymous comments.
I think about how our individual language banks are shrinking; our adjectives are imprecise and ordinary. We've developed a kind of counterfeit communication which diminishes us all to its banality. We function as a society that does much of it's communication in writing and instead of getting better at it we merely state rather than illuminate. There is a desperate need for a Renaissance in decency. This app is pollution.
