Good June 23 update, but...
Yelp is--hands down--the only site I use for restaurant recommendations. The website is very user friendly, as is the app. The June 23 update is good, especially with the relocation of the search bar to the home tab, but the 'Explore' tab is a bit confusing. If I pick a city and a particular dish, I only receive three recommendations. I assume these are the top three places that fit a particular criteria, but isn't it a bit redundant given that the search feature does the same exact thing but with more results? I love the map that shows the top three restaurant locations, but it would be great if Yelp could expand the number of recommendations to maybe five and/or add a "preview" feature for each recommendation. A "preview" could tell us whether a place is vegetarian friendly, gluten-free, kid friendly etc. Or it could feature "highlights," such as the most liked picture, check-in "peak times" that tell you when are the most popular times that Yelpers stop by, or the most commonly mentioned keywords.
It's an overall useful app that is clearly getting better every month. I look forward to the next update.
Yelp is corrupt, reviews are not reliable.
Yelp will immediately remove any honest, negative experience at the request of a business owner or manager, particularly ones that advertise with them. Business owners and managers can indeed pay to have a negative review removed with no questions asked. They will also attempt to extort money out of a business by pulling down good reviews and leaving the bad ones if you are not willing to pay for advertisement. They will deny this of course, but read through some of the reviews on them and what they have done to some of these people who do not want to pay their outrageous advertising fees. Patronizing any business that advertises with them is very risky, always check other sources before going to any business that yelp recommends. It is very easy to wind up in a shady business or restaurant that has been given a good review on Yelp, and you could also be missing out on a great restaurant or reputable business because they world not pay Yelp, and have purposely attempted to slander them. Read through some of the experiences that people have had with yelp, and you will know for your self why to never trust yelp or any of the businesses that advertise with them, good luck.
Unintuitive and messy
People use yelp for everything now. But the "nearby" tab focuses the entirely on restaurants, bars, coffee & tea, delivery, reservations, happy hour, and night life. They need to take all of those and put them under two overarching categories at most. Then fill the other space with the other categories of businesses people search yelp for.
When you check in somewhere, you're asked if you'd like to take a photo, then you're asked a number of subsequent questions about the place. Great. Except one problem. If you don't want to take a photo or can't answer a certain question, they don't ask any of the subsequent questions. Make a "skip" option available for the questions asked after a check in.
If you're looking at a review for a particular business, and then select a different tab (profile for example), you can't go back to the page you were looking at that.
