You’ve Never Budgeted Like This Before
YNAB is unlike any personal finance app, expense tracker, or money management system you’ve tried before—because it works. The powerful combination of award-winning apps and a proven method—YNAB’s Four Rules—has changed the lives of hundreds of thousands of people by teaching them to get control of their finances, stop stressing, and live the life they want to live.
A Proven Method—YNAB’s Four Rules
Rule One: Give Every Dollar A Job | Be intentional about what you want your money to do before you spend it.
Rule Two: Embrace Your True Expenses | Break up larger, less frequent expenses into smaller, manageable amounts. By saving monthly for insurance premiums, holidays, or car repairs, when the time comes, your money is ready and waiting to do its job.
Rule Three: Roll With The Punches | When life changes, so must your budget. Make adjustments and move along. Flexible budgets succeed because they’re guilt-free, realistic, and sustainable.
Rule Four: Age Your Money | As you repeat the first three rules, you’ll increase the time between earning a dollar and the moment you need to spend it. When your money is at least a month old, you’ll have finally broken the paycheck to paycheck cycle for good.

What a budgeting tool should look like
Long time Mint user here (5+ years), and after 1 week I can wholeheartedly say this is the budgeting tool I’ve always wanted Mint to be. This system tells you what the money in your account(s) is allocated for, so you know if it’s safe to spend or not. It took several days of reading tutorials, watching training videos, and testing to get my mind wrapped around this approach, but it has been well worth it. The community is awesome, with an active forum for questions and inspiration, along with free targeted webinars for interactive q&a with a budgeting expert.
I am used to spending too much time on Mint figuring out how my account balances related to my budget. I created separate savings accounts for vacations and down payments and tax payments and made transfers to them when I thought I could. Now I spend 5 min each morning updating transactions that posted, allocating any new income to the budget item as needed. No need for separate accounts and transfers!
This app has changed our life for the better. My husband and I are in our 40s and empty nesters. We have always lived paycheck to paycheck. We wanted to change our ways and to think about our future. We have had YNAB for 30 days and feel good about our money situation for the first time ever. We no longer worry about our bank balance but just check our budget amounts before spending. We are actually funding next month categories and Christmas at the same time. Highly recommend for those that are sick and tired of living paycheck to paycheck. Plus their support system answers questions quickly and knowledgeable. They help you get your budget off the ground!
It’s not a budget; it’s a waste of time
I wanted to love this app. On the surface, it looks to have everything I wanted, such as integration with my accounts so transactions could be loaded automatically, the ability to add my own categories, and use of both desktop and app.
But I hate it. The integration rarely works. The categories are not as flexible as I’d like because I can’t use some of the fields sometimes, several of my banks are not accessible via the automatic feed, they introduced some functionality that is stupid — it’s not helpful and it junks up the screen. I can’t always “match” something I’ve entered manually with the transaction that comes in automatically, but in order to actually use it for budgeting, I need to know in real time what money is in my accounts. The feed is supposed to show the next day. It often doesn’t.
I’ve just found this tool maddening. Don’t waste your time.
