Why food journaling?
It’s the first tool that experts recommend to their clients who are interested in achieving a balanced lifestyle. It helps with self-awareness, without being judgemental in any way. It helps us understand our current behaviors and maybe surface some we were not even aware of.

How does it work?
Ate helps you quickly capture your meal before you eat. With a few simple taps, you can keep notes about your meal and learn about your hunger cues. You’ll soon realize how food affects your day-to-day activities and performance in and out of the office. Ate helps track the time of your meal and the time between meals. If you are starving by lunchtime, you can see what you had earlier. Maybe you didn’t eat the right food to fuel you throughout the morning. Ate also helps you capture what you drink. Tracking water, coffee, alcohol, juice or soda consumption has never been this easy. It puts everything on a visual timeline with your meals so you can better understand your habits. [Premium]

Ate is your personal health journal. On its own it enhances your mindfulness and self-awareness. If you choose, it can be shared with your coach, nutritionist, or close friends for additional motivation.

We have recently changed our name to ate from YouAte. Some users found the “You” part a bit judgy, and we just can’t have that.

Ate’s core features are free to use and will stay free. We do offer a premium membership that will unlock features such as Custom Q/As, Liquid and Activity tracking, the ability to share your profile via the web and to reuse your favorite photos when saving a meal. You can sign up for monthly, quarterly and yearly auto-renewing plans.

Processing of a subscription is handled by Apple. Your credit card will be charged through your iTunes account when you confirm your purchase. Subscription renews automatically at the same price unless canceled at least 24 hours before the end of the subscription term. You can manage subscriptions in Account Settings in iTunes after purchase. Refunds will not be provided for any unused portion of the subscription term.

**Announcement: our new name is: ate**
We decided to drop the “You” from “YouAte” because it had some negative connotations. Bit pointy, a bit judging. And we don’t need that in our lives.

Swipe left on the “Share your Day” image to show meal descriptions or answers to your mindful questions over each associate meal image. You can find them both under the new Day Recap view.

We have also added a new experimental feature: Save the location of your meals. Basically, we take your current location and attach it to the meal you just saved. We plan to use this in a search/map feature we are considering adding. We are also open to other ideas you might have. Anyway, we wanted to give you a chance to start saving that data while we figure out what to do with it. It’s turned off by default and we will not share it with anyone. So if you want to start saving location, you have to enable it in settings.

We have also added daily step counts and activity rings from Apple Health to the Day Recap view for our Premium users.

Customize the question/answer sets under meal details. Did the default answers not match your needs? Looking to track your hunger levels on a hunger scale? Or track carb content? Custom Q/As will allow you to do all that for each meal. Customize existing answers or add brand new ones with a custom graph automatically generated for you. (Premium)

- Mindfulness Graphs -
A visual representation of the answers to the mindfulness questions under meal details. See your progress for the past 7 days and reflect on the reasons behind the choices you made. A great way to improve on your current habits.

- Profile Page -
We have also redesigned the profile page, to give you a better view of your goals and how you did in the past 7 days. Customize the profile page to only show you what you think is important to you. Tap on “See all” to see all graphs available to you and select the ones you would like to see all the time on your profile page. Hope you like it!

- Watch 4 support with Water tracking -
We have updated our Apple Watch app to fully support all the new complications in Watch 4. We have also added the capability to easily track your water intake from your wrist.

- Mood Tracking -
This was a big request! Track your mood throughout the day. Feeling happy or bored during the day? Log it quickly with a few taps. It can help you understand why you made some of the decisions that you made. (Premium)

- Note Entry -
You can now save your thoughts and feelings with the new “Note” type entry. This is the first of several new entry types we will be introducing in the upcoming weeks. (Premium.)

- Apple Health sync for Water and Activities -
You can now elect to sync your water intake and activity data with Apple Health. So if you are using an external tracker (like your Apple Watch) that syncs with Apple Health, all that data will now show up on your path in the app. Of course, we also sync in the other direction, so if you quickly need to log water or an activity, like yoga, it will be pushed to Apple Health. - VoiceOver support -
We added full VoiceOver support for our visually impaired users. We are super excited to have them on ate and looking forward to their feedback on what else we can improve on.

Exactly what I was looking for!

I love this app! I wanted a food diary thing, but don’t want to track calories or even type in every teaspoon of oil I use to cook my dinner. I love that I can quickly type something in, and the photo aspect is unexpectedly great! It’s quick to snap a picture and it motivates me to add things like fruit and vegetables to my plate since I’m visually more apt to notice that I’m skipping them and just eating a sandwich or a piece of toast. I also like the freedom to change what is “on path” for me - since it’s not specific to one type of eating. I really love the little arrow that encourages me to make a healthier choice for my next meal if I do go off path - it’s not judgy and unlike other things I’ve tried, I don’t tend to feel like I’ve “ruined” a day with one meal or food, so I’m more likely to just move on and eat something that is better for me at the next meal rather than derail and start again the next day (or week or whatever!). Thanks for such a helpful tool!

When you add notes to your meal, you can also dictate it which makes it super easy to add some quick description of the meal and any other thoughts you feel like sharing. Awesome! LOVE this app!

I’ve always hated logging what I eat because it’s too tedious, time consuming & detailed. But YouAte makes it so quick & easy. All you have to do is snap a quick pic. Even if you don’t enter it that moment you can go back whenever, import the pic & it will automatically enter the time you took the pic. I love the reflection questions as well that help you think more about why and how you’re eating. It also has a pie graph to show you how much of your eating is for what reasons & it keeps great stats on how much time you go between meals. The layout is simple and attractive. This app makes food journaling/logging/tracking so much fun! You can even share it with friends to keep each other accountable & encourage friends in eating better! LOVE that! Everyone should be using this app!

Down 17lbs and counting

This app is amazing. I’m someone who has tried EVERY diet and fitness app out there and nothing has been as effective as this app. I’ve lost 17lbs since I started using the app a little over a month ago and I’m still losing. The best part is you can customize your goals for you, you aren’t forced to eat or not eat any foods. I’m still eating whatever I want, but the mindfulness questions for every meal are helping me realize what foods make me feel good. If I get off track of the path I created for myself, it isn’t the end of the world and I don’t binge on ice cream like I would with other diets. I just try to be more mindful during the next meal. Mindfulness really is key to being able to make smart choices in any situation, and I’m so grateful for this app! THANK YOU FOR YOUATE, DEVELOPERS! It really works!
