“it works surprisingly well on touchscreens”
- Pocket Gamer

“As you would expect from DotEmu, this port is basically perfect from a technical standpoint. […] The actual gameplay is generally intact, however, and that means Ys Chronicles 1 is a must-have for any mobile RPG fan. It's a sheer joy to play, full of a kind of upbeat excitement that doesn't come around all that often. ”

Ys is an action-packed, heroic fantasy JRPG game that immerses you in a beautiful Japanese artistic universe. Originally released on PC and PSP in the 2000s, this remake of the famous franchise’s first episode, titled " Ancient Ys Vanished: Omen", returns in a mobile version especially adapted for touch gameplay.

In Ys, you play as Adol Christin, an adventurous young swordsman. Early in the story, you find yourself on a mysterious beach in Esteria, a kingdom whose cities are besieged by hordes of demoniac creatures. Esteria’s people are depending on you to defeat the demons and free the kingdom. To accomplish your goal, you must find six sacred books containing the history of the ancient land of Ys; books which will also provide you with the knowledge to restore peace. Throughout the game, you’ll gain experience and strength by discovering enchanted weapons and artifacts. Become a mighty knight and destroy your enemies!

Ys possesses a rich and poetic atmosphere with beautiful artistic direction, an incredible soundtrack and a deep story. Ys also stands out thanks to its unique fight mode: you must pounce on enemies to attack them ("BUMP" system). Perfectly adapted to touch devices, this one-touch combat system makes the game even more exciting and enjoyable.

Ys: the Unbalanced Omens

I've been gaming since the early 80's. Between arcades, consoles, handhelds, portables, PC and mobile platforms, I've played (played NOT owned) over 1,500 titles. This port of this classic title is an extremely solid game, which falls apart at the very end.

The damning issue stems from a lack of gameplay balancing. More specifically, the final boss is unbeatable. The playing field is 25% smaller than the areas where you fight the other bosses. Every time you land a blow on Dark Facht, a small portion of the field falls away. If you don't move fast enough after scoring a hit, you fall through that hole and die. At any rate, you end up reducing the playable area to one that barely leaves enough room to be maneuvered around.

As this is happening, Dark Facht's zipping around the entirety of the screen like a ping pong ball. This includes the border areas you can't reach. While trying to mount an offense, you're also being assailed by multiple, simultaneous fireballs that explode in all eight directions. So you're constantly taking damage.

You don't have the option of using any restorative items. Any status buffs your equipment gives you are nullified. To be fair, that's how it is with all the boss encounters here. However, that doesn't mean it's fair or even sensible.

I've come across bosses like this before, in other games. The only way to beat them is with a cheat. But, when you do that, it ends up crashing/freezing the game as you weren't supposed to be able to beat them. I don't think that's the case here. The devs desperately need to roll up their sleeves and actually do some gameplay balancing to alleviate this issue.

Please add a fixed control pad!!

I have played - and beaten - this game on many systems, most notably the TurboDuo and Famicom. I was thrilled to see that the DS versionhas been ported over to iOS, because I like the idea of being able to take my favorite games with me wherever I go. And Ys 1/2 are definitely among my very favorites.

However, I am very disappointed with the control aspect of the game, I have played many RPGs on my iPad/iPhone - some of the "action JRPGs" like Ys, and they all used a fixed control pad which worked beautifully. This game, however, uses a crazy "the pad is wherever your fingers are" control system, which leads to less ability to control your character movements. I did just figure out that to run, I just push an imaginary joypad button on the right while controlling my motion on the left... There was a cryptic diagram early on that I believe explained this, but I'm not the most clever person around and I need it explained outright.

I am just getting started but don't think I will have a chance at beating some of the bosses with this inferior control system. Come on, DotEmu - how difficult would it be to implement an option to turn on a fixed control pad like the Kemco RPGs use? It works great with those games.

Otherwise, this is a faithful port of the DS version, and I am still glad to have it on my phone. I will hold off on playing it more, though, with hopes that a fixed joypad option is added... because I am getting motion sickness with the current control system.

Not for me.

Didn't like the combat system. Fighting should evolve more then running into the enemy at the right angle.
