Useless Ratings

The Ratings are all arbitrarily compressed right around 4 stars, making it useless to pick based on ratings. I looked at dozens of restaurants in my home city, and very good places are pretty much rated the same as so so places. The app uses the same ratings as you see in the side bar in Google search, which are user reviews. Generally, the number of user reviews are much smaller than the number you would find for the same restaurant in Yelp. It suffers from most of the ratings being slightly below to above 4.0. From what I could see, even less range than Yelp, which is poor in this regard as well.

The method for acquiring user ratings simply isn't as refined as the paper based 30 point system they had used for the printed guides. Sure, when I filled these out back in the 90's it took some time, but it made me, as a consumer reviewer, very thoughtful in my response.

Someone finally fixed Yelp!

Cons: they have replaced the venerable Zagat 30-point scale with a more app-friendly 5-point scale.

Pros: everything else! I've been using the app for a very short amount of time, but already I love it. It's similar to Yelp but with the crisp, insightful oversight of the Zagat we've all sworn by for so long.

At a glance: Lists/guides aren't crufty duplicates of each other - they appear to be written by actual professionals. Wait let's let that sink in. Online content that isn't crowdsourced? What a breakthrough!!

For each restaurant, the overview is a very Zagat-y short paragraph which really tells you what you need to know. If you want to see user reviews, they are there too, so you can be sure to learn that "u will get fud poysin hear" or that "they gave us soooo much food and it was twice less expensive than in Manhattan!"

What else? Just enjoy the new app!

Thanks Google, Zagat is finally useful

That arbitrary 30-point rating system was so confusing. 5-point, 10-point or 100-point scale would have been simple, but I never liked the 30-point scale. This is so much better. The other thing I didn't like about Zagat was that so many restaurants that I looked up over the years weren't in there, and I found out the restaurants had to pay Zagat a whole lot of money to be included. We'll see if Google's ownership enables the app to be more inclusive, which is really the only way it'll be truly useful.
