Zombies, Run! 5k Training is an 8-week training program and audio adventure for beginners that’ll improve your fitness so you can run a 5km distance.

We give you clear and detailed instructions about when to walk, jog, run and stretch, building up your confidence and stamina over 25 workouts - combined with a gripping story delivered straight to your headphones.

(If you already have some running experience, check out our “Zombies, Run!” app with extra features including 40 more missions, ‘zombie chase’ interval training, a base-building game, time and distance audio notifications, and more!)

Zombies, Run! 5k Training comes from the creators of Zombies, Run! (Six to Start & Naomi Alderman), the world’s most successful smartphone exercise game with 800,000+ players worldwide.

Featured by the New York Times, BBC, Time, Wired, and Runner's World!

“This app is amazing. It gets me wanting to go for a run, it’s not exercise anymore, it’s pure entertainment.”
“Keeps me entertained and actually makes me want to stay out running longer. Love it!”
“This app is a work of genius - I finally have a reason to run!!

Devised by Julia Jones and Shauna Reid of Up and Running e-courses, this 8-week, 25 workout training program combines awesome storytelling with expert training know-how. Using this app isn’t just good for you - it’s also amazingly exciting!

You’re Runner 5, a vital member of one of the last outposts of humanity at Abel Township. During 25 workouts, you’ll be trained to help find supplies and protect the town from the ever-encroaching horde of the shambling dead, in a story written by award-winning novelist Naomi Alderman. You’ll learn about the characters, and you’ll have a vital mission of your own to train for and complete. Once your training is complete, you’ll be in the perfect place to continue the story as the hero in “Zombies, Run!”

Everything about Zombies, Run! 5k Training is designed for beginner runners: clear and detailed workout instructions, a gentle learning curve, and importantly, we don’t make any zombies chase you until you’re ready!

Choose your own custom music playlists before you start running: the story unfolds in during your tracks through a series of dynamic radio messages and voice recordings.

We integrate fully with our free online ZombieLink service, so you can check your running stats and view and share your maps online, all in a beautiful and easy-to-use interface! Plus you can sync your runs with Runkeeper and export them as GPX files.

Zombies, Run! 5k Training takes place between Mission 1 and Mission 2 of Season 1, so it’s a fantastic way to experience 24 all-new missions about how Runner 5 first trained up with Sam, Doctor Myers, and the rest of Abel Township to become a valued Runner. (But if you’re looking to find out what happens after Zombies, Run!’s epic cliffhanger, you’ll need to wait for Season 2...)

One small caveat

I've had the "big brother" version of this app just for fun for about 9 months now. I used it when I would walk to pick up my kids from school and back and I loved that app. I never saw myself wanting to run but recently went to support my wife at a 5k color run and decided I wanted to give it a go. So I downloaded this app and it's been just as much, if not more fun than the "big brother" version. It's easy to use, easy to understand your next steps, easy to check the status while in or after a run and does an excellent job keeping track of your distance ran and pace. I would recommend this app to anyone looking for a motivating 5k run app. There's a caveat to that though; if you have the other zombies, run! apps and want all of you exercises to go into one place, they won't. I am nearly a month into this app and I still can't get zombielink to work. It works just fine from zombies, run! but the 5k trainer will not link at all. I have not had any problems with the story cutting out or a loss of sound that others have reported, but I'm rather disappointed that this app does not link to the other via their system as advertised. For that reason I can only give four stars. But, I still completely recommend this app. That one glitch does not make this app any less fun to use.

Great execution of an excellent idea

I never really understood how people could say running was enjoyable. Before this I tried a bunch of techniques to get me to run from the original nike+ sensors to the running apps to other third party apps. I would do it for two maybe three weeks and just give up because I would just get bored

Then I heard review after review about Zombies, Run! and I was still skeptical. I couldn’t believe any app could make running fun. But still, I wanted to get into better shape so I decided to start with the 5K training app. I just completed Week 5! This app has truly made running fun for me. I have surprised myself and my family members by how consistently I have been running. I look forward to my runs now. I want to know what happens next in this wonderfully written story. And I really want to finish my 5K training so that I can then feel good enough to graduate to the main Zombies, Run! app and start doing those missions!

In terms of the app itself, I have so far had zero issues. The app has worked very well. I agree it would be nice to have podcast support but that is not a big enough gripe for me to dock any stars on this app. Thank you Six to Start and thank you Naomi Alderman and thank you Kickstarter for bringing this app to reality.

Why I don't regret buying another couch to 5k app

People who say they get a "runner's high" make me want to tie their shoelaces together. But I want to be able to run at least a little bit. I want to be able to finish a 5k without the speed walker groups passing me up (it has happened)
I'd heard that this app and the original Zombies Run app make your training runs more enjoyable & for awhile I thought great marketing tactic guys but I'm not buying it. But after coming across review after review a couple of weeks ago I finally said "Ok - I'll buy this app (on sale) and prove all those reviews wrong" (I tend to go into exercise endeavors with a bit of a fatalistic attitude.)

So last night after a crap day at work when I had every available excuse at hand (too tired, too late,..,) I still found myself putting on my running shoes & getting out there. Did this app magically cure my running aversion? No. But when I thought abt flaking out last night the progress board on this app flashed through my head, progressing through the mission flashed through my head. And next thing I knew I was out there with my shoes on, dog on his leash, firing up this app. Apparently it's won me over.
So I guess it's time to delete those other 5 or 6 couch to 5k apps sitting on my phone. I don't know how or why exactly but this one has worked for me.

Side Note: from here forward the speed walker group (henceforth aptly referred to as the "walkers") will never catch me again :)
