About Brenda Earle Stokes

In the artist’s words: Describe one of your earliest musical memories in detail. The first time I heard Oscar Peterson I was 15 years old and suddenly I felt like I knew what I was supposed to do with the rest of my life. Jazz spoke to me immediately and I never forgot that moment. What are your top 3 all-time favorite albums on Apple Music, and why? Why did you choose these three albums in particular? Joni Mitchell, Joni Mitchell (Song to a Seagull) Oscar Peterson, The Best of Oscar Peterson Ron Sexsmith, Ron Sexsmith Joni Mitchell and Ron Sexsmith have inspired a lot of my songwriting and Oscar Peterson's amazing piano playing has inspired me as a jazz pianist. And they are all Canadian, like me! Find a song of yours on Apple Music that you love and tell us what makes it special. Tell us why you chose this song. “The Birthday Song” I wrote this song on my 33rd birthday while my life was on the cusp of change. I sat at the piano thinking back to the past and looking ahead to the future, feeling grateful that I finally knew who I was. It was a very empowering moment. What’s one of the most memorable moments in your career so far? Writing, recording and releasing the album Motherhood has been the culmination of nearly 12 years of daydreams and sweat equity. It's my first album of completely original material played by a dream band. I am so proud of it!
