About Business of Dreams

Matching sunny indie pop melodies to slick '80s production, Business of Dreams is the introspective and lyrically dark work of Corey Cunningham, a West Coast guitarist/songwriter who had played in several notable bands, like Terry Malts, before going solo.

In fact, before he started making music under the Business of Dreams name in 2017, Corey Cunningham already had almost two decades of being in bands under his belt. The indie pop band Magic Bullets, the power pop-meets-punk trio Terry Malts, and the classic indie pop group Smokescreens all utilized his guitar playing and songwriting skills. He was inspired to start Business of Dreams as a way to work through the death of his father and chose homemade synth pop and '80s pop as the project's template. The first Business of Dreams record dealt with loss and despair, set to the bright washes of synths, clunk drum machines, and Cunningham's plaintive croon. That self-titled album was issued in 2017 on Cunningham's own Parked in Hell label. He formed a live band and played a handful of shows, then joined Mike Krol's live band. He also began work on a second Business of Dreams album, using more sampling and funneling his soft indie pop songs through late-'80s production techniques. Slumberland Records released Ripe for Anarchy in early 2019.
