About Cappella Romana

Alexander Lingas is a choral conductor and musicologist. He was the recipient of Fulbright and Onassis grants, which allowed him to travel to Greece to study with cantor Lycourgos Angelopoulos. For his postdoctoral studies, he received a fellowship from the Social Sciences and Humanities Research Council of Canada to study at the University of Oxford with Metropolitan Kallistos Ware. Lingas also received a fellowship from the American Council of Learned Societies. He is a fellow of the University of Oxford's European Humanities Research Centre at St. Peter's College, and he has published articles for The Oxford Companion to Music, The New Grove Dictionary of Music and Musicians, and The Oxford Handbook of Byzantine Studies. In 1991, Lingas founded Cappella Romana, a vocal group that specializes in performing music of the Eastern Church, particularly Medieval Byzantine chant and contemporary works connected to the Byzantine tradition.
