About Cephas & Wiggins

One of the last links to the Piedmont blues tradition that flourished in the 1920s & '30s, guitarist John Cephas joined up with harpist Phil Wiggins--25 years his junior--following an impromptu jam in 1977. The pair were prolific, recording just about an LP a year in the 1990s, and remained festival mainstays for almost 35 years (until Cephas became terminally ill in the mid-'00s). The act owed its long-running popularity to its anachronistic sound; the duo's albums sounded as if, were it not for spotless quality, they were transcribed from half-century-old 78s.
