Combining shoegaze, industrial, doom metal, dub, and electronic in darkly beautiful ways, Chasms excel at crafting remarkably empathetic music on albums such as 2019's The Mirage.
Originally based in San Francisco, Chasms' Jess Labrador (vocals, drums, guitar) and Shannon Madden (bass) began making music together in 2011. The duo debuted with the "Bad Evolution" single on Sleep Genius and the When It Comes EP on Dream that year. The Riser EP followed in 2013, and the duo gathered songs from both EPs on 2014's Subtle Bodies collection. While recording their first full-length, Labrador suffered a hand injury that was among several setbacks that slowed their progress, but Chasms' debut album, On the Legs of Love Purified, arrived in late 2016 via Felte.
Not long after the album's release, Labrador and Madden lost many people dear to them -- including Madden's brother and their friend and frequent collaborator Cash Askew of Them Are Us Too -- in the devastating December 2016 fire at Oakland, California's underground venue Ghost Ship. To deal with their grief, Chasms continued to perform and record, and moved to Los Angeles for a fresh start. They also transformed their music with elements of dub and minimal techno, which first emerged on their 2018 single "Divine Illusion," a reworked version of which appeared on Chasms' second album, The Mirage. Mixed by Telefon Tel Aviv's Josh Eustis and mastered by Rafael Anton Irisarri, the album appeared on Felte in February 2019. ~ Heather Phares
