About Dan Balan

Maldovian singer, songwriter, and producer Dan Balan blends multicultural sounds and influences into a broad style underpinned by steady, upbeat rhythms. • His father is a diplomat who was named director of Moldova’s Information and Security Service in 2012. • Drawn to music at a young age, Balan formed the band O-Zone in 1999. Their song “Dragostea Din Tei” became an international hit after going viral in vlogger Gary Brolsma’s 2004 clip “Numa Numa Dance,” originally posted to OG meme factory Newgrounds. • “Dragostea Din Tei” went even further in 2008, when it was sampled by T.I. and Rihanna for their 2008 collab “Live Your Life.” • O-Zone disbanded in 2005, and in 2007, Balan released the LP The Power of the Shower under the name Crazy Loop. The single “Crazy Loop (Mm ma ma)” charted in four countries. • In 2010, he dropped the Crazy Loop moniker and released “Chica Bomb” under his own name. It was a big hit in Europe, charting in 12 countries. • Since 2013, Balan has released more than a dozen standalone singles, one of which, “Numa Numa 2” (featuring Marley Waters), calls back to his viral O-Zone hit.
