About Dave Tull

An adept jazz, pop, and big-band drummer, Dave Tull established himself as an in-demand session and touring musician before launching his own recording career, singing and playing his own literate, often humorous songs. As a drummer, he emerged in the 1980s and has since worked with a handful of marquee performers including Barbra Streisand, Maynard Ferguson, and Michael Bublé. As a leader, he balances his time between drumming and singing with his trio, a sound he showcased on his debut album, 2008's I Just Want to Get Paid! His reliable and steady drum talents could also be heard backing Streisand on her 2017 concert special The Music... The Mem'ries... The Magic! A native of Berkeley, California, Tull began playing drums at a young age and listened heavily to jazz while growing up. By his teens, he was a gifted performer with a strong sense for swing and the jazz tradition. After studying at California State Northridge, he embarked on a lucrative career, touring and recording with the likes of flügelhornist Chuck Mangione, high-note trumpeter Maynard Ferguson, and crooner Michael Bublé. From 2000 to 2010, he was also the main drummer for Barbra Streisand. Away from performing, Tull also expanded into teaching, including instructing at Pasadena City College, and for the Los Angeles Jazz Society's Bill Green Mentorship Program.

Along the way, he discovered his talent for singing, and began writing his own compositions influenced by the Great American Songbook tradition. In 2008, Tull showcased his singing and drumming on his debut album, I Just Want to Get Paid! From there, he reunited with Bublé and also worked closely with Manhattan Transfer vocalist Cheryl Bentyne on several albums including 2012's Let's Misbehave: The Cole Porter Songbook (for which he wrote the vocalese lyrics for "All of You") and 2016's Lost Love Songs. A year later, he appeared in Streisand's concert album and film The Music... The Mem'ries... The Magic! Tull returned to solo work with his sophomore album, Texting and Driving, in 2018. ~ Matt Collar
