Dave Zoller on Apple Music

Dave Zoller

Dallas-based pianist Dave Zoller's interest in jazz arrived during his adolescence when at the age of 13 he heard a Dave Brubeck album, while attending a Boy Scout camp, no less. He became completely hooked after hearing Miles Davis' Kind of Blue. There wasn't much jazz played around the Zoller household until then. Zoller's first professional gig came while attending S.M.U. in Dallas, TX. In 1965, after a three-year hitch in the Army, he attended U.M.K.C. Conservatory of Music in Kansas City where he worked with many of the local jazz musicians. Zoller then migrated once again to Dallas, which has since been his permanent abode. In 1985, he became musical director for trumpet player Al Hirt before embarking on an active recording career under his own name. From 1993 to 2001, Zoller made five albums for dpz JAZZ, which he founded with Dr. Ambrose G. Hampton Jr. In addition to his own albums, wife and singer Genie Grant has released two albums on the label. His latest effort, Between Us Cats, is a collaboration with bass player and guitarist Fred Hamilton where he continues to mainly use his own material. Zoller has also appeared on several albums as a sideman. Zoller is not only adept at writing jazz compositions and charts but has also prepared more than 1,600 music tracks for radio and TV. Zoller's pianism reflects the wide range of influences on his style, running from Thelonious Monk to Jimmy Rowles. He avoids over-embellishment, but at the same time his music is by no means stark and spare. He is not reluctant to engage in some odd timings and rhythms allowing his music to rise above the ordinary. Zoller continues to work in Dallas co-leading a quartet with Grant and freelancing as a pianist. He also publishes original jazz orchestra and combo music through his firm, DPZ Music Production, Inc. ~ Dave Nathan
