About Didi Kempot

Didi Kempot’s sad and abrupt passing in May 2020 doubtless left his legion of fans, who dubbed him the ‘Godfather of the Broken-Hearted’, broken-hearted. Credited for popularising the campursari genre, a potent mix of traditional Javanese sound and Western instrumentation, Kempot was an active part of the Indonesian music scene from the ’80s, having started out busking in his hometown of Surakarta, Central Java. Famous for his tales of loves lost and rarely gained, Kempot primarily recorded in the Javanese language, making him a national and intergenerational cult icon for the dispirited.
