About Doris Troy

Bronx-born R&B singer Doris Troy sang in church choirs and worked as an usher at the Apollo before making her way as a singer. She co-wrote her huge 1963 hit “Just One Look,” whose Caribbean rhythmic undertone may have come from her Barbadian family background. The song was later covered by countless artists. In the '70s, Troy was a backup singer for everyone from Pink Floyd to Carly Simon. MAMA, I WANT TO SING, the musical production based on her life story, was turned into a 2008 film featuring young R&B star Ciara in the lead role.
