Jackal

About Jackal

Mikey Pennington, the Los Angeles-based electronic musician known as Jackal, produces bass-heavy floor-fillers which take influence from a variety of genres, ranging from grime and dubstep to house and hip-hop. First breaking through with 2013's "Shakedown," an intense fusion of trap and dancehall, he released material on labels like OWSLA, Mad Decent, and Buygore, gradually progressing to a more reflective, emotion-rich sound with tracks like 2018's "In Love with Nobody." Born and raised in England, Pennington began playing various instruments as a child, and started producing dance music as a university student. He began releasing tracks as Jackal in 2013, and his early single "Shakedown," which was remixed by trap duo LOUDPVCK, became a hit throughout the EDM scene. Pennington moved to Los Angeles and continued producing tracks and performing regularly. "Let Me Tell You Something," a collaboration with Grandtheft, was released by Diplo's Mad Decent in 2014, and the label released subsequent Jackal tracks like 2015's "Animal Style." The producer additionally contributed "Jamba" to OWSLA Spring Compilation 2015, and his tracks "Netflix N' Kill" (with Dr. Fresch) and "Gunshot" (featuring grime MC Jammin) appeared on Buygore in 2016. He also remixed "Millionaire," a single by Cash Cash and Digital Farm Animals featuring Nelly. Jackal's 2017 EP Endorphins featured guest vocals such as Anfa Rose and Josh Congress, taking his sound in a moodier, more expressive, and more intricately arranged direction. This was further developed through productions like "In Love with Nobody" (2018) and "Christ Person, Woman God" (2019). ~ Paul Simpson
