Essential Albums
- As grand (and grandiose) as Nothing’s Shocking, Jane’s Addiction’s major-label debut seemed, its follow-up Ritual de lo Habitual outstripped it sonically and in its ambition. With “alternative music” and metal getting more and more happily acquainted, the quartet smashed together a meld that not only sounded right but was, just a year and change before the release of Nirvana’s Nevermind, very timely. Guitarist Dave Navarro divebombed through a near-claustrophobic mix with heavy riffage and squawling high-end solos. His vocal foil, Perry Farrell, staggered a line between pretension and self-knowing humor — “Been Caught Stealing” was hilarious with or without its petty-thievery video; “Ain’t No Right” insisted that there was likewise “no wrong,” but its greater message was “I am skin and bones, I am pointy nose/But it motherf-----’ makes me try!” Farrell went on to prove the relevance of his DIY message as Lollapalooza founder.
- Bringing together arty college-radio kids and throw-the-horns hard rockers, Perry Farrell's provocative lyrics and confrontational presence spoke to disaffected teens of all stripes. The Zeppelin-like power and fury of tracks like the swaggering "Ocean Size" and near-psychedelic "Mountain Song" turned Dave Navarro into a new generation's guitar hero. But this L.A. band wasn't interested in straightforward Sunset Strip hard rock: Acoustic character study "Jane Says," the horn-driven funk of "Idiots Rule," and howling rocker "Pig’s in Zen" show a far more eccentric sensibility.

About Jane's Addiction
Named after a housemate of frontman Perry Farrell, Jane’s Addiction was one of the first alternative rock bands to break into the mainstream in the late ’80s. ∙ Their most successful LPs—1988’s Nothing’s Shocking and 1990’s Ritual de lo Habitual—are ranked among Rolling Stone’s 500 Greatest Albums of All Time. ∙ Farrell, who coined the term “Alternative Nation,” cocreated the iconic Lollapalooza festival, with the inaugural 1991 event intended as the band’s farewell tour. ∙ “My Cat’s Name Is Maceo,” from the 1997 compilation Kettle Whistle, featured jazz great Maceo Parker playing alto saxophone. ∙ Farrell credited Entourage star Adrian Grenier with getting the HBO show’s producers to use “Superhero” as the theme song. ∙ Alice Cooper chose their chart-topping 1990 hit “Been Caught Stealing” among his list of essential recordings on the BBC radio program Desert Island Discs. ∙ Jane’s Addiction received their first nomination to the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame in 2016.
